Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

1963 ford galaxie 500 352
Before replacing the fuel sending unit, the Guage stayed past the F and never moved. I dropped the tank and replaced the sending unit. The Guage moves but as I out more gas it went closer to E. pretty much filled the tank and now it marks below E
Any suggestions?
I already tried switching both wires on back of the fuel Guage but that didn't do anything.

You got a chevy sender, works backwards from Ford.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

It was doing the same thing with the original sending unit. I replaced it because the float was full and sank to the bottom, yet it still marked full.

So I replaced the sending unit and I filled the tank and now it marks empty. When the car is off it marks Full. Shouldnt the needle go to E when the car is turned off?

When you say turn it over? Turn what over? Can you be more specific please?

Thanks guys

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

With original equipment when the float is on the top it is maximum ground. Gauge of course reads Full. As the gas levels drops the sender loses ground and moves toward Empty.

On a Chevy, when the float is on the top (full) it is at minimum ground. This is what you have now. You fill it up and that un-grounds the sender. On a Chevy gauge this would raise the needle, but you have a Ford gauge, which reads minimum ground as Empty.

See chart below were maximum ground is 0 ohm.

Ford sender: 10 ohm (gauge F), 75 ohm (gauge E)
Chevy sendr: 90 ohm (gauge F), 0 ohm (gauge E)

I think if you ground the wire that runs from the gauge to the sender you will see the needle go to F, if it is a Ford gauge.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

The gauge is not grounded out of the needle would not move from where it goes when the key is turned on.

I have no clue how you go the wrong fuel sender to fit a ford fuel tank, but it's wrong...

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

Does the temp gauge work correctly? It and the gas gauge work off of the same CVR. If it works ok then pull the wire off of the gas gauge sending unit and turn on the key. What does the gauge do? If it goes to E then go to step 2. Ground the wire going to the sending unit and turn on the key. What does the gauge do? If it goes to F then the sending unit is bad or wrong. Don't leave the wire to the sending unit grounded too long as it will burn out the gauge. Let us know how this turns out.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

The temp Guage works fine. All I had to do was replace the temp sending unit and it it to work. But thanks for the info! I'll try it out and report back!

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

Ok so when the car is off
1. the temp Guage returns to hot side. Should this be happening?
2. When the car is on the temp Guage returns to the left of the half mark a little.

Fuel Guage,
1. I unplugged the cable that comes from the sending unit to the fuel Guage and ran my own cable to the ground on the battery and turned the key on and it went to empty side. Turn the car off and goes back to full.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

Could a wire be on there wrong on the ignition switch? Like the wire that should have no power when key is off has power or was spliced into somehow? Does your radio work when the key is off, assuming it's the original style radio. What about turn signals? Just tossing out easy to test things that would somehow be causing a problem. Or the constant voltage regulator has gone gunnybag maybe since those gauges are effected by the regulator.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

Radio is not connected. Turn signals don't work unless I turn the key to the on position.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

Ok, both gauges should go to the left side when the key is off. My only thought is that some one has had the dash out and apart and installed the gauges upside down.

Re: Fuel gauge working backwards... Help

The gauges won't be upside down if the needles pivot from the bottom.

Off, and the Voltage is gone, the needles rest to the Left as said above. Cold the Temp gauge will not move more than a teency bit until it begins to get warm. And the Fuel gauge will return to what ever specific level of fuel you have when the key is on.
