Just to much work for me, I can see wanting the "fun" gears on a friday night after work, that puts thursday as a wrenching night and then sat or sunday to put it back for the highway drives during the week for my boy going to school. Thats why I say get somthing in the middle and enjoy it. Then again, we are not building a drag car, if we were we wouldnt have started with the toad platform, its just a fun car and swapping gears isnt fun to me.

Re: Rear end gear selection??
tommy,
No one has mentioned a 5 or 6 speed tranny, or an aftermarket over drive like gear vendors. Of course you should look up hone drive. that was the first overdrive for muscle cars Ford used, but you cannot find one. Any way with a GV you could have 6 gears with just your C6 and you stock rear end. That will give you highway cruising gears and around town fun gears, you can build your motor the way you want to and won't have to lug it around or burn it up on the highway. Of course with all things price jumps in. A GV will set you back about 3300 complete for your application. But sounds like you have some cash to spend. Just a thought, good luck

Re: Rear end gear selection??
Almost went with a 5 speed but decided to go 4 speed on our car. A overdriven transmission would sure be nice though. Guess its not to late the tranny isnt in yet. Never heard of a gear vendors overdrive, does that go on behind the transmission or is it part of the transmission? Guess I need to look that up.

Re: Rear end gear selection??
Scott,
Here is a link for GV fords 3 speed auto trans. They have specific ones for each type of trans. Look at the chart on final gear ratio with what rear end gears you have. For example 3.90 gears final drive with GV overdrive is 3.03. So going down the highway would be great and tooling around town would be fine too.

Sifi-Sit,
Don't think this has been mentioned, don't forget to have the rotating assembly balanced, $200 well spent .

I agree it is very expensive, but if you want to have it all you must pay. They make one for toploader too.
For fun check out this.

I have seen a few on muscle cars and man that is what I want for mine. Saw one on a boss 9 back in 78, owner said he put it on right after he got the car. they are manually shifted next to floor shifter on hump. But they are unobtaineum.

Re: Rear end gear selection??
I would have suggested going to a 4R70/75 4-speed OD autos with lockup that will hold 500hp for 1/2 that price, or one of the suitable 5 or 6-speed manuals - but why does everyone want to gear the engine down out of it's efficiency range? Never mind the loss in acceleration. This is not a stock engine. You wouldn't gear a stock engine to attempt cruising at 70 mph at 800 RPM for the same reason, would you? Un-confuse me.

David,
Another way to look at it is, with 3.00 gears you tack down the road @ 70 mph at around 1700 rpms, with 4.11 gears you tack down the road @70 mph at around 3500 rpms. With an overdrive you can have 4.11 gears going down the highway @ 70 mph and with a push of a button drop you rpm's to 2000. Your motor will not pull like in the quarter, but it will pull you down the road fine. I have had cars with both gears and they both work fine with big cams or little cams. If you want to go fast and quick (turn the od off) if you want to go top speed or cruise down the highway at lower rpms (turn it on). Another way to look at it is, with a C-6 you will get six gears and with a toploader you will have 8 gears to shift through. At 3500 rpms the overdrive will not drop you to 800 rpm, only 35% (est) of your rpm range, so maybe 2000 rpms.

Na, they haven't made it this far west. I watched the edisode last night and it looks like they're about to cross over into Ohio because the one guy lost a horse 'n buggy 'drag race' LOL. And the 'leader of the pack' in Pa got the front window of his Caddy smashed. Can't wait for the season finally next week, haha.

That would be the one if you could find one . That would put my 3.89 down to about 2.60 .

I've heard 500hp is pretty 'iffy' with a 4R70?75. I might be a tad shy but a heavy car with a good launch is what I'm afraid of.
