Choke Pulloff Clearance Setting Autolite 2100

I'm trying to properly set the choke pulloff on my '63 with the stock 2100 carb. 352, Auto. All other settings (including bellcrank) are set to spec, and the car is running well. It just idles too rich on cold startups. i.e. choke plate is not opening quite enough. I was messing around with settings, and got everything way off, so now I want to set it back to spec and fine tune from there.

On page 3-10 of the 62-63 shop manual, it mentions a procedure to set the choke plate clearance where you turn the choke housing 1/4 turn counterclockwise then press on the choke plate until you feel resistance. Then put a drill bit of the specified size in the opening to set the clearance. It then says "refer to specifications for the drill size." For the life of me I can't find anything about the drill size or choke clearance in the specifications section. Does anyone know what size bit it is, or a good way to approximate it?

Or if anyone has a link to a FREE version of an autolite 2100 specifications booklet, that would help as well. I had one when I rebuilt the carb a few years ago but seem to have misplaced it.

Re: Choke Pulloff Clearance Setting Autolite 2100

you'll likely find that factory spes don't work well a your engine isn't as new. engine cold- start as usual.remove air filter housing. push choke plate open or closed to see where it rus better. adjust pull off accordingly. too much pulloffwill cause backfire under acceleration. not enough pulloff will make engine sluggish and maybe blow black smoke

Thanks for the advice. I set it to the factory specs as a starting point and it worked perfectly. I started it dead cold with the air cleaner off so I could see the action of the choke opening. It started up easy and ran smooth right away. I put it in drive and made some sharp accelerations and didn't get any stumbles or backfires. So no fine tuning was necessary in my case. But thanks again for the advice.

Big improvement from where it was. I used to have to give it a few solid revs to open the choke plate after starting, or open it manually by hand. It really wasn't a big deal, but I'm kind of anal about making everything work perfectly. Anyways it seems to be working how it's supposed to be now.
