Re: The Super Stockers
I have one old family friend who has tons of stories about street racing and drag racing in LA around the late 50s-early 60s. First he had a 57 Ford with a dual quad 312.
In 1960 he traded that in on a brand new Hipo Starliner. He loved that car, and said it was nearly untouchable on the street. At the track, he was having a little trouble with setup. One weekend after he lost his first race a truck pulled up next to him in the pits. It was Les Ritchie and his crew, and they didn't want to see his Ford lose again. They swapped the carb and did some other tuning on the car and send him back for another pass. They had never met before, but didn't charge him for the help. Needless to say the car ran much better. He continued to race the car off and on until 63 when he traded it in on a new 427 car, but never really raced it much.
Later that year he went into the military and that was the end of his run with Fords. When he returned he switched over to circle track racing, and also made the switch to Chevy because of the cost of racing a Ford with Holman Moody support.
