The Super Stockers

Ide like to start a thread about the rich history the galaxies hold of super stock starting in the early 60s. This is what im building my car around. Something about this era and factory participation just peaks my interest. Ill add alittle at a time.

Add to this thread if you have any pics.

How they were:

Re: The Super Stockers

you're talking drag racing here but 63 was a big year for the Galaxie in Nascar as well. Here is an article on the old Wood Bros 63 Galaxie that was just restored for Leonard Woods induction to the Nascar Hall of Fame recently.

Re: The Super Stockers

Here are pictures of our 63 Boxtop that we are finishing up. It currently has a mild 428 in it so we could get it on the road, but we are building a stronger 406 right now. I drove it up to the Crower Cams car show last month at our local drag strip (25 mile trip), and decided to make a few passes on the street tires for fun. Obviously traction wasn't great, but the car went down the strip straight and I was then able to drive it home so I called it a success. Everyone loved the car and commented about how it looked like it was straight out of the 60s.

Ha, it was pretty bad. First time down the strip, on street tires.

10.1 @ 77 mph in the 1/8th. Spun the tires off the launch, and 2 more times when I tried to put the power down.

Just finishing the up the final rear end now, 4.11 with a 31 spline Detroit Locker. Will have 28x10.5x15 slicks and should get down the track much better.

Re: The Super Stockers

BH, ive got the same setup in mine, 4.11, Detroit, strange case, waiting for the axles from strange.

When you get the tires bolted on, let us know how much it picks up.

The 60's, when drag racing was fun and affordable.

Re: The Super Stockers

I have one old family friend who has tons of stories about street racing and drag racing in LA around the late 50s-early 60s. First he had a 57 Ford with a dual quad 312.

In 1960 he traded that in on a brand new Hipo Starliner. He loved that car, and said it was nearly untouchable on the street. At the track, he was having a little trouble with setup. One weekend after he lost his first race a truck pulled up next to him in the pits. It was Les Ritchie and his crew, and they didn't want to see his Ford lose again. They swapped the carb and did some other tuning on the car and send him back for another pass. They had never met before, but didn't charge him for the help. Needless to say the car ran much better. He continued to race the car off and on until 63 when he traded it in on a new 427 car, but never really raced it much.

Later that year he went into the military and that was the end of his run with Fords. When he returned he switched over to circle track racing, and also made the switch to Chevy because of the cost of racing a Ford with Holman Moody support.
