factory disc brake off 66 galaxie on drum car

any reason you can't take the disc brakes off a 1966 galaxie and replace the drum setup on another 1966.there has to be some reason cause I have not seen it mentioned before or done.

You can but you need a matching M/C. Read up on it, lots posted here, just search.

Sure you can, but my understanding is that in '66 disc brake tech was not as good as it became just a few years later ... so, if you are going to do all the work, why not swap in better tech? 77-79 Tbird works, and of course brand new tech too.

yes- i've also been told (by my buddy who has a '66 with factory discs) that the parts are harder to find, and more expensive.

The 66 had KH 4-Piston Calipers and a single reservoir dual outlet MC.

The KH are more efficient but replacement parts are more expensive. You would be best to update to a 67 dual reservoir MC if used.

As mentioned, unless you are origional dedicated, the later intermediate swap will result in less trouble(s) (IMO).

well I kinda figured newer brakes would be better and I know I don't want a single reservoir master cylinder.I've already converted my drum brake master cylinder and thanks for the help.

But, doesn't the 66 Galaxie have 5x5 1/2 inch lug stud spacing and the later models use a smaller lug diameter/spacing something like 5x4 1/2?

the 5 x 5.5 spacing was the full-size trucks.
as far as i know, all the full-size cars of this era have 5 x 4.5

my '65 has 5x4.5, at least. i'm running Ranger steelies on it.

Re: factory disc brake off 66 galaxie on drum car

I guess I'll have to measure my wheels/stud size. I have a vintage set of American Racing 200S wheels that I bought cheap. A friend of mine with a 51 Ford PU keeps pestering me to sell him the wheels as he believes they are 5x5.5. I'll double check and maybe; if they are 5x4.5; he'll leave me alone!!

Re: factory disc brake off 66 galaxie on drum car

The bolt pattern will be the same (5 x 4.5) for just about every full size Ford into the 70s and beyond. I think some Lincolns went to 5 x 5, but I'm not sure.

What typically comes into play for disc brake conversion is the size of the centre hole. As an example, my original 65 wheels won't fit over the 71 LTD rotors I am using because the centre hole is too small a diameter on the wheels. Nearly all aftermarket wheels will fit, or wheels from the car on which your rotors were original fitment as they have a larger centre hole bore.
