I specifically need the Trans as I need to replace this one and I need to know what I need to replace on this one. It is not in my posession at the moment and im being told 18 different things by the owner. FMX then C6 the cruise 0 matic lol. I cant get a clear pic all I know is its stock and I think that this is the code for a C6 and if so it should be gtg with a c6 then correct?
IF so where do I locate one? I apologize I am on a friends account here he is overseas.
We are rebuilding this car for the owner as a gift for when he returns thanks so much!!!
ragoons correct I was thinking last two # 41 was 4 1 axle and tranny
its more likely dso #41 Chicago,IL
maybe someone can look for you to determine if it has a cast-iron center or is a all aluminum housing..
if iron fmx/mx cruis-o-matic ....
all aluminum c4 or c6
Seems it is supposedly "fine" in reverse but when "mashed" in gear it revs out but goes no where but if "feathered" it will move and run out okay so much so that its driveable around town. Apparently it went down while playing with the neighbors mustang.
This is the wonder of dealing with a car I am not in front of to help with. Trying to assist someone in ordering or getting a hold of the right transmission to work on is the issue. Basically need to get my hands on a shell to build but I need to make sure i get the right one to work on so that it can be built and slid back into place and driven when done. I cant get the one out of there nor do I want to get into detail to try to explain this debacle lol. (the wonders of good deeds here).
Please note this is not the car in the picture we are referring to.
I could be completely wrong as my Ford Car Parts and Accessories catalog stops after the '64 model year, but it appears to me that you have not included the axle and transmission codes for us to figure out. On the VIN, 7 is the model year. G is the assembly plant (Chicago). 55 is the Body Series. H is the engine. And 249566 is the consecutive unit number. On the warranty plate, 63B is the body code. F is the exterior color. 6B is the interior trim. 03U is the build date. 41 (Chicago) is the DSO code, the sales district from where the car was ordered. I don't see any code information for axle and trans. Someone with a '67 model year factory workshop manual or Parts and Accessories manual will be able to help you with this.
SO we were missing the 8 Y where does that leave us lol
By the looks of what I am seeing its an MX or CruiseoMatic
BUT it doesnt have a green dot L shifter..Its a PND12 etc deal....this is such a pain in the azz i know. I am sorry guys if I could do this by standing in front of it I wouldnt be here lol.
=IF it is infact an MX what can I direct swap in and what years if yall dont mind just an FMX? What do I need to find specifically in an FMX if so. The car is a 67 Galaxie with a 390 in it. Thanks in advance!
This would be so much easier if someone had a '67 Galaxie shop manual at the ready. Using Raggaren's Mercurystuff.com reference in an earlier post, the engine would be a 390/2 bbl (H), and the transmission is an MX (Y), assuming (always a dangerous thing to do) the Mercury codes are the same as Galaxie codes. Mercury doesn't show an axle code 8, but going back to my 1964 book, there is an 8, but it's for 3.89 gears which would make no sense in a 390/2bbl automatic Galaxie. Not that it isn't possible, but the more likely rear gearing for such a car is 3.00 or even 2.80. Maybe you could recheck the axle code?
So what trans options do I have what year range MX can I snag a working trans from anything specific I need to look for. The motor in the car is a well built 390. What I know if it is it managed about 6 fun runs once it was properly set up from a rebuild and it ended up how it is now. They arent sure of what its putting out exactly but it managed to apparently eat the trans up quick enough so I am not so sure i want to bother with another MX since building one/getting parts seems rather pointless from what I have reseaerched today...so with that in mind....
What specific years/requirements do I need to look for in a c6. Just the 390FE bell housing that fir all but the 460 and one that is a column shift or is there a specific year range? OR... What is required for an FMX swap and what specifics would I need to find there. I appreciate the help guys very much.
My Merc had a C6 in it didnt need to swap just had to build/resto.
and Honestly i was a pontiac guy before these so when it comes to the ford stuff I still get a bit lost in the mix.
All the parts are available. You will spend much more trying to do a FMX swap than you will building your MX.
Sounds like your seals are shot and your are not building enough pressure for your clutches to grab, your your clutches are worn, or your bands are worn. Honestly, unless you hear something rattling around in there, you didn't blow it up.. you just pissed it off.
I've never seen or monkeyed around with an MX. But I have with an FX and just recently rebuilt an FMX. I can say the FMX (which from what I read shares the same yoke as the MX) yoke is the same as the C6. The FX transmission yoke is smaller in dia and will not fit. As for the propshaft length difference not sure about the MX, but the for the smaller FX and a C6 intended for the full size car the difference is 3.0" in propshaft length.
As for rebuilding those old Borg Warner transmissions (FX, MX, FMX) the hardest part we had in rebuilding the FMX was finding the selective flat thrust washer to set total end play. When I say the hardest part was, I mean we couldn't find any trans dealer who had them or could order them. And of course the end play on the FMX was way out. My only saving grace was having a bunch of FX transmissions around and one of them had phenolic washers in it and I was able to mill one of those down appropriately to shore up the end play in tolerance.
While you can send in your bands to be relined and buy the basic rebuild kit with frictions and steels, there are still some parts that are hard or impossible to find and if you need them you'll have to make the parts or have someone make them. Which makes me wonder what transmission shops would do if they can't get a part for one of these old BW trans. If the end play is out of tolerance would they just slap it back together regardless?
