I recently got gifted a 59 galaxie 500. I tried to lock the doors the other day and noticed that if I press the plunger and then close the door, the plunger pops back up. Is this normal? What is the propper way to go about locking them?

Hello,

It's probably the same for the later year galaxies that also exhibited the same. When you want to lock the door, push the lock down and before you close the door hold the exterior door button in whilst closing the door the lock button should stay down.

This was probably to safeguard against accidentally locking your keys in as you had to be sure you wanted to lock the door by holding the exterior button in.

Cheers.

I think they changed to the newer way (push the lock button down, hold the thumb button in, close the door) in 1965 or 1966. On 1964s and probably earlier, you have to lock the door with the key if you are outside. If you are inside of course, you can just push the lock button down. I guess this is even a more positive way of preventing you from locking your keys in the car. ;) I just checked my owners manual and confirmed this is the correct operation and not just that mine is broken. :)

I know it pops open when ya shut the door...and locks with the key from the outside on my 65...will investigate if holding the exterior button in while shutting keeps the interior knob down....after I finish my beer (s) of course...possibly tomorrow...lol.

Thanks for the info. I messed with it again this morning and noted that I was unable to lock it with the key. I also tried pushing the plunger down, holding the door button and closing the door. The plunger popped back up and the door wouldnt close. I then tried pushing the plunger down and while the door was still open tried to unlock it with the key. It did nothing and it feels as if there is no tension when turning the key. I am now wondering if something isnt connected properly inside the door.

Could be the rod fell off inside the door. My '64 I have to hold the button down with plunger pushed down when i shut the door to lock it or lock it with the key. I never lock it because if I do i have a heck of a time unlocking it again as the lock is worn out i guess. But also being a convertible i'd rather have them open the door than cut the top up...if i had a top.

doors have to be closed on my 64 in order to be locked from inside or outside by key...
like mentioned by others.
believe it was intentionally designed that way to keep you from accidentally lock you self out..:grin2:

I could be mistaken, last time I locked the doors was in 2007 and before that 30+ years before.

Now if they could do something like that with the trunk so you don't lock your keys in it! :)
