64 500XL windshield trim question

I am about to install a new windshield in my 63C body code 1964 Galaxie 500XL . I am super confused about how the top center section of trim at the top of the windshield is held down. This piece: http://www.ctcautoranch.com/Used%20P...olding%202.JPG

I ordered these clips: http://cgfordparts.com/CATPICS/LOGO/...0035000400.JPG and they came in a pack of 6.

Looking at the car and the clips, it seems as if the clips screw in somewhere due to the position in which they sit in order to clip onto the trim, and also, because they have a round hole in them. Problem is.... there is no place on the windshield frame in which to screw them in. Installing the clips on the trim first, then placing the trim where its should sit seems to indicate the clips screw into the very tip of the roof. But that seems totally wrong.. especially since I'd have to drill holes there that don't exist. I have to say I'm baffled because I've seen other 64's and know exactly where the trim goes. Plus, the A pillar trim also indicates exactly where the trim should sit.

My rear window frame had clips that screw in, simple and clear. The front is a mystery. Especially since the top center section of trim has two screw holes on either end, but again, nowhere to screw them in.

If anyone can shed some light on this i would great appreciate it.

Re: 64 500XL windshield trim question

the molding retainers screw into roof edge ..then molding lip slip over retainer...

the screw holes should be there already.. unless they got filled with body filler and painted over???????

Wow, I guess they must have been. Well that makes me feel a bit better about drilling in to fresh paint I'm just hoping I dont have to remove headliner to access the back side of a bolt. Or maybe I can tap the holes?

BTW that exploded schematic is great, exactly what I was searching for on Google but couldn't find.

dont have to remove headliner ..
and no need to tap hole..
only uses a short sheet metal type screw..
use some body 3M putty sealer when screwing clip in...so water dont get in

Re: 64 500XL windshield trim question

Follow up question on this...

I am test fitting the clips onto the trim prior to drilling into the car. This exercise alone has me worried because I'm sure I will need to be precise in getting every clip to sit exactly where it needs to along the arc of the trim to mount the moulding properly.

However, in simply test fitting the clips to the moulding off of the car, its unclear how they will snap in. They seem to be the correct width for the moulding, but there is no way for me to physically snap them in that I can see. The moulding is formed in shuch a way to have a lip, but I cant get the clip past the lip. Is there a special tool or technique I am overlooking?

molding does not snap on to clip...
you only put a screw thru at ends of molding after it is set in clip, that locks molding in place....

I am confused... what is the purpose of the 6 clips in the center? These are the ones in question. You wrote earlier: "the molding retainers screw into roof edge ..then molding lip slip over retainer..."

Sorry, you've been a great help but, I am still confused.... True or false: the moulding slips over the 6 clips in the middle.

If true, mine will take a lot of force it seems because in all my attempts to do it off the car have been unsuccessful.

only upper part of molding hooks on to the 6 clips...
you would think both upper and lower part of molding, but that is no the case here...
end screws and side post molding lock it all in place...

wish i had a couple good pictures for illustration ......

AHHH I see, ONLY the upper part of the clip. That makes it much easier! Thanks again for the clarity.
