65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

Hello,
I am new here and I am new to Galaxies. I have owned multiple Mustangs and decided I really liked the bigger cars. Anyway, I just purchased 65 with a 390 which was a "barn find" and it is missing some things. I know the Instrument hoods are not remanufactured, yet, but mine is missing. The dash itself is in very rough shape. My question is has anyone figured out what to do with the covers that are sold or know where the best place to find one would be. I will troll eBay and Craigslist, but I am open for suggestions. This car basically only had the rear seat and the door panels are shot, but at least they are there. Also, need a complete front end kit and open for recommendations on suppliers for tie rods, drag link, etc. Thanks!!

Check out this thread.
http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/gala...-dash-pad.html

I use this on my dash. Ford - Ford Dash Cover - Black - Can Be Painted - Ford Galaxie - Macs Auto Parts
My dash cover over the cluster was peeling up so I gut teh fabric off and glued this on. I do not have the right hand section of the dash. Mines used to have it but currently it is just black metal. Is there painted metal under yours on the passenger side?

My dash pad (long piece) is beat up, but I believe there is painted metal under it. My instrument hood is missing so I don't have anything there now. After driving it in the sun, I know why they added the hood! I thought about getting the cover and filling it with foam or something. Maybe put a piece of aluminum where the screw holes are and fill the rest with Great Stuff to hold it in place. I would just like to have one so I could fabricate something. And thanks for the response!

Yeah. So are you thinking about making one from scratch? I can take pictures of one and post it on here if it will help. Where are you located?

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

I live in Greenfield, IN...sorry I will update my profile. I am not going to fully restore the car yet, but I do want the dash to look complete. Without the instrument hood, I can't even buy the cover for it so I don't have much choice right now.

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

I have a 65 Galaxie dashboard (no pad) from my current project. I basically bought a car and a half, with a lot of extra parts. Let me know if you're looking for other specific items.

I think I am going to strip the pad off and then fabricate an instrument hood. It seems that the hood is scarce and people are holding on to them.

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

I built my own http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/atta...-console.2.jpg. To cover it I used the plastic dash caps over the dash pad, glued to be one piece, covered with thin foam and had an upholsterer glue and stitch a vinyl cover on.

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

That looks great! I assume you peeled the old pad off the dash on the passenger side?

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

No, the plastic dash covers fit over the dash pads. They really work nice, my 65 Gal had one when I bought it and I didn't even notice. If your pad is tore up you can grind down the high spots so the cover can fit. The covers for the 65 are getting harder to find they look something like this.

With no pic of your situation I may be wasting my fingers here typing.... But after I build a wooden structure to hold my gauges I saw the instrument panel eyebrow was going to be too low to see the gauges. So I tilted it up but now it would not match up with the long piece. So I bondo'd up the space to make a smooth transition. Seems like you could pretty much do the same thing, get some board, sticks, wire and a glue gun and make a structure that will hold the gauges and also the dash cover. For the wiring you should use these things so when you want to do some work you can detach the wires as a group instead of one at a time.

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

Hello,

I was perusing through E-Bay and just happen to come across this. I think (will have to double check) but the Instrument Cluster Pod Pad is the same for '65 and '66

Here's a brand new one; molded/padded not a cap.

Cheers

Re: 65 Galaxie Instrument Hood Quest

Yes. The padded pod over the speedometer is the same 1965-66 with the fully padded dash. The pods for the steel dash (found usually on Custom or Custom 500 models)are longer because the pod extended further forward to meet the steel.

I was really hoping I could find a used one to at least buy the cover for, but they are gone before I even know one pops up on eBay. I think I will make something for now and check Ford swap meets as well as online for an original one.

go to ctcautoranch.com and view their inventory. EMail them with what you want and they will give you a price plus shipping. This is an old car junk yard.
