Galaxie 500 XL newbie

Hi all, I am 99.9 percent sure I am going to buy a 66 Galaxie 500 Xl on Fri. Super nice shape, but the guy says there is a iffy spots on the frame. What am I looking for? Also, it has the 352, is this a four barrel dual exhaust version? TIA, DB.

Re: Galaxie 500 XL newbie

DB, Having seen about four of these galaxies in the past year - what I'd be looking for would be rust close to the torque boxes near the front. Check along the frame rails under the doors, I'd take a screw driver and poke around all along the rails where the frame sits up inside the car body. If you dare, stick your finger inside the factory frame hole and feel around for large chunks of rust. This should give you a good indication of how rusted the frame might be.

Other areas to check would be the rear wheel arch, I've heard that area can be bad but have not experienced it first hand. Take good pictures of everything, you'll be thankful you did later when you want to reference back.

I've seen them rust out in front of the rear wheels also.

As far as the 352, the XL could go either way on the 4bl and dual exhaust. Behind the rear tires about 12 inches back on the outside of the frame should be a tab on both sides with a rubber mount for the exhaust to hang. I am not sure if all Galaxies had that from the factory on both sides or not. If you can get it for the right price, I wouldn't worry too much about the frame because the car looks to be all there. A good fab shop or chassis builder can patch in the torque boxes or pieces of frame. You would have to check around your local area for a good shop. The torque boxes on these are easy because it is literally a flat piece of 1/4" steel.

Hello DB Cooper,

On the frames for these 3rd gen galaxie's (65-68) you might want to read ford4V429's post on his radical excursions into rebuilding the frame on his '65. Here's the link. His frame was one of the worst I've seen.

http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/gala...ong-story.html

I am working on a '66 as well and also had frame rust I had to cut out and weld in, but if anything it's the antithesis of what ford4V429 had to do. My repairs were considered minor compared to his.

I also have a '68 XL with chunks of frame missing that I'll have to tackle in the future.

As for a 352 in '66 and dual exhaust and 4 jet carb, well I'm pretty sure they all come with that at least in '66 if memory serves reading the Service Manual. Plus add the fact that we also have two plain Jane '66 galaxie 500's with 352's and they both are factory dual exhaust. One didn't come with the engine but the Ford factory original dual exhaust was on both cars still and the one with the engine came with a 4100 Autolite carburetor.

Cheers

Desert is correct regarding the 352. All 66s with 352s came with the Autolite 4100 4-barrel and dual exhaust.

My Gal has rust there, mainly caused by leaky trunk seal. Other than that it was Texas rust-free. As yours should be, DB Cooper, Oregon rust-free.
