VIN Under Fender

Hello again, FordMuscleForums,

So the VIN is located "in the inner fender, under the hood inside the notch in the top of the left hand fender" on my '67 Galaxie according to Marti Auto. This is confusing and I still don't understand where it is located. Do I have to remove the fender to see it? My only concern with doing that is lining everything back up properly when reinstalling.

Is there any way to see the VIN under the fender without removing the fender? Can I use a small mirror or something?

Re: VIN Under Fender

Mines on my 66 is just above the drivers inner fender, attached to the firewall under the master cylinder. Close to where the wires pass through into the passenger compartment.

My 65 has it on the driver's door close to the latch.

Hello Griff,

I can speak for the 1966 and 1968 and by some degree of assuredness the '67. At the least there are 3 definite legal placards (welded in) for the VIN. There is the warranty tag on the door, but it most definitely says not for titling or registration only because doors can be swapped.

The main easy tag to see is on the passenger side engine compartment above either the heater plenum (no factory air con) or HVAC plenum (factory air con). The other two are on the cowl sides and you have to remove the outer wings/fenders to see them.

By 1968 (not sure of '67) but it was also in the windscreen on the passenger side.

The different year Service manuals will indicate where the easiest legal tag to see is.

But since the proof is in the pudding here's pics of the '66 and '68 tags.

The next three pics are of a 1966 showing both side cowls and engine bay cowl tag.

The next 4 pics are of a '68

Hope that helps and clears things up a bit.

Cheers.

The VIN on the '67 is on the passenger side cowl above the heater box. It's a metal tab sticking out with the VIN number stamped into it.

If you look at my heater box directly above where the heater core is you'll see some wires then above that a tab sticking out (painted black) on the cowl. That's where the VIN is located.

My 66 Ford shop manual only mentioned the Data Tag on the door and the VIN on the tab on the firewall above the Heater plenum. I was in a junk yard last week and a 66 had both front fenders off and each side had a metal tab with the VIN stamped in it attached just below the A- Pillars. Will be checking mine when I pull the front fender to replace later this SUmmer.

So, I went and looked. There is no vin on the plate on my car where it is supposed to be. Learn something new everyday!!
Here is the location where a previous owner removed and replaced the VIN. Just to the right of the brake booster. That's where it was when the guys at the DMV inspected my car to give it a title here. But now I know that is not the factory location.

When I first got my shop manual and saw that the tab on the firewall was the location of the VIN, mine was not there. I had the tab, but no VIN #. I thought someone had removed the plate, so I contacted Tennessee DVM to see about getting a replacement since I had a title. Luckily when I saw the one in the salvage yard and the numbers were just stamped into the plate and not riveted on, I came home and wire brushed all the paint off my tab and luckily there was my VIN number! Too many rattle cans sprayed over it I guess. :-)

I'll take note of that. When I get my car painted in the far future, I will sand the paint that is on there off to see if there are any numbers stamped on mines.

Re: VIN Under Fender

When I went to purchase my car from the previous owner I wanted to make sure the VIN matched the title. Like you guys, the VIN was filled in with paint and unreadable. I brought a can of Aircraft Paint Remover with me, poured some on a rag and was careful to apply it to only the protruding tag. I waited 10 minutes or so and wiped off the paint that had wrinkled up due to the stripper and there was the missing VIN.

In my experience, I liked using the chemical stripper as it lifted the paint entirely out of the stamped numbers and left a clean, paint free surface. Starting with a paint free surface I was able to dust it with a light coat of black spray paint that protected the bare metal yet didn't fill in the VIN.

Re: VIN Under Fender

Thanks for the replies, everyone! I don't know how I missed that tab on the firewall.

Anyway, I just ordered a Marti Report.
