MX dipstick length

Some time ago I replaced my Tranny with a 59 MX. For reasons I disremember I had to trim the top of the dipstick tube and then trim the dipstick. Long story short, now I can't trust the dipstick reading. What is a good way to figure how long the dipstick should be and how high up the full mark should be?

Re: MX dipstick length

The tube on an MX runs into the pan. My thought would be to run a piece of stiff wire down until it rested right where the tube turns the corner but not let the wire itself turn. That might give me the correct length. Maybe someone who has their Cruise-o open could see if that is right.

Hi puttster,

I have two old FX's, dunno if the dipstick tubes are the same or not as MX's, but if you can research that and if they are I can do the measurement if you like.

Cheers

Re: MX dipstick length

No thanks desertXL. I think it needs to be one where the tube goes into the pan.

Hello puttster,

The FX transmission does go into the pan like the MX, just dunno if the tubes are different lengths. Only the FMX has the tube that goes into the case.

The FX trans. The little brother to the MX.

Offer still stands.....

Re: MX dipstick length

Ahh, FX. Okay! If you can pull off the tube and look in there, see if the stick turns the corner.

I have an MX in the shed, I can measure the stick. I believe i did already for someone sometime in the past here. Have you tried searching? Pretty sure i did.

Re: MX dipstick length

You are right, Deb! Here is how you're answer reads to me: 1.) the tip of the stick does not touch the bottom of the tube at the turn, in fact, looking from the pan end, you can't even see the stick.; 2.) inserted, the Full mark is approx one inch above the top of the pan. Full mark is 2-7/8" above the tip and 5/8" above the Add mark.
Man, five years ago. :-(

Re: MX dipstick length

Thank you ShotRod64 for answering puttster. Puttster I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to get to it yet. Strong weather front moved through yesterday, a couple of days ago it was 80, then yesterday we had winds to 70 MPH and the power went off for a lengthy bit of time. Then it was flurrying in the evening

Still cleaning up the mess....

But sounds like Shotrod64 has you covered...

Cheers..

That windy front is just now passing through here. But I took my measurements and lo and behold my stick seems to be the right length but my notch to indicate Full, is below where the Add should be, meaning I was always running about two quarts low. So I cut a new notch 2 7/8 inches from the tip and that will be my new Full. We will see if at that level fluid is still puking out of the tube. But that's a matter to be solved five years hence :-)

Thanks you two!

Re: MX dipstick length

Here it's been windy off and on and heard there was a small tornado down near portland. But mostly it's been rain and more rain. Been only a couple days of no rain and clouds for at least a month straight. Sure getting old!!

Putt, hopefully it fixes it but not quite sure why it would spit out fluid if it's too low. Sounds like something is clogged or something. Isn't there a air hole somewhere on a transmission kinda like a rear end has? HaH, that doesn't even sound good!! But you know what I really mean! Like years ago with oil coming out of the dipstick tube of my engine and it was a sponge thing in the air cleaner housing clogged up, technically speaking i think it was from the pcv to the air cleaner.
