Question Determining if 68 Galaxie XL has the GT package

How can I tell if my 68 Galaxie XL has the GT package?

The previous owner who bought the car new claims it is the GT. He points out that the chromed air filter (no spout), the chromed cover for the brake reservoir and the chromed valve covers are only available on the GT.

The car does not have a GT badge. It does have the stripe running along the bottom of the body.

I know that the GT has a stiffer suspension but I do not know how to distinguish between what it has and what was on the standard XL.

Any help in determining if my car has the GT package would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Auguste

Re: Determining if 68 Galaxie XL has the GT package

I'm not sure you could tell from engine dress-up pieces, I suspect that the factory didn't produce a car with the open element air cleaner in those years. The pictures I've seen of Cobra Jet Mustangs have the snorkel and pre-heater on the air cleaner, and they are painted blue, so the chrome bit you have are probably an owner installed dress-up kit. To know for sure you'll have to decode the VIN and warranty plate/sticker, the info you seek will all be there.

Hello Auguste,

Since the GT was roughly a 200 dollar dealer package and I do not think it's noted anywhere in the service manual or on the tag directly. You may want to order a Marti Report on your car, it will tell whether or not that one was ordered with the GT package. Otherwise it's going to be tough to tell if for sure it's a true GT or a clone or not one at all after all as you say it's hard to determine the difference in suspension. The GT came with simulated mag wheel covers (cheesy and are probably lone gone if it is), GT badging (can buy those repopped), factory disc brakes (loads of '68's had the power disc brakes, even our craptastic LTD and XL came with those), a high ratio rear end (if the tag is still on the 9" you can read what ratio it is) and it was only offered on XL's with a 390 or 428.

OK my 2 cents worth

Good Luck

Thanks for the info. It is strange in that the original owner says he did not add chromed accessories to replace the originals. I guess since the car is a 1968 he must of forgotten that he added the chrome.

Thank you.

Many many thanks. I ordered the Marti Report . . . I did not know that that report existed.

You're welcome.

If you feel like sharing the results, please do so, I am curious too as I also own a '68 XL fastback. I've always been curious how many were made with a 390 or 428, factory air con and the bucket seats/centre console, seems like that's the tri-fecta of '68 XL's. Seems like so many are lacking one or more of the three mentioned above.

Cheers

I splurged a bit and bought the complete/expensive report which will identify all the options that came with my car and the production statistics. I justified the expense by saying it was an early Father's Day gift to myself

I will be happy to share the results with you and everyone else. However, they said that will probably be three months before I get all the information. I will post as soon as I get the information.

Have a great day!

I guess these could have been dealer installed accessories. DesertXL seems to have a good grasp on many of these details. The Marti Report is probably the best advice. I look forward to hearing what comes back.

Re: Determining if 68 Galaxie XL has the GT package

Here's a little article you might like regarding XL GT's. I like you when I bought our '68 XL I collected as much information as I could, fortunately Hemmings has back years online of their previous magazines, saves me from scanning it in.

Here's an article on a '68 XL GT.

https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mu...d/1280691.html

There's some interesting facts and figures listed as well as price of the options. I especially find it amusing how the AM-FM stereo radio is almost the same cost as the GT package. It took me several months just to find 2 of these AM-FM stereo radios for the XL and LTD to replace the factory AM ones.

If it's the one thing that Ford really annoyed me about the '68 XL is that unlike the '66 galaxie 500 XL, when you bought an XL suffix to the galaxie 500 you were given the bucket seats and centre console regardless. But by '68 not only did you have to pay for the XL (which is technically and legally not licensed as a galaxie 500 XL as it became its own model line by then and was just a Ford XL) but you had to pay for the bucket seats and centre console as extra.

<little rant here>

If you think about it, what are you getting in an '68 XL without the bucket seats/console; emblems denoting "XL" and upgraded grill (in the case of '68 hide-a-way headlamps). Doesn't seem like whole heck of a lot. Seems to me the fun of driving an XL is the neat looking interior that separates you from the regular ho hum full size cars. Please don't misunderstand I'm not knocking regular galaxie 500's (have 2 of them), just that it seems it's part of the mystique of an XL.

<rant over>

Enjoy.

Hi DesertXL

Thank you for taking the time to provide me with the history and your experience. Greatly appreciated.

I have already read the article twice!
