Good morning.

During a recent road accident my crystal ball was damaged making it impossible to read your mind and know what you're vin number is.

Please let us know and we will be happy to help.

Have a great day

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

If you do a Google search on

Ford and Mercury Identification (Warranty Plate)

That will bring you to a website where they explain how to interpret your vin number.

More information can be obtained by getting a Marti Report that will cost you anywhere is between $45 and $275 depending on the level of detail you want.

Good luck and have a great day

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

reason I want this is that I don't have a data plate anywhere on the car and no evidence of one ever being on the door/door shut(no rivet holes) here's the numbers: warranty 3j66z183017 and chassis no. 63b-66-15g-722551-1-4. I can't seem to match it up with the decoder shown above in the correct order?

Hi

I am not an expert. Here goes nothing.

From the vin it seems that you have

- a 1963 Galaxie 3j66z183017

- built in Los Angeles 3j66z183017

- is a 4 door LTD with bench seats 3j66z183017

- has an automatic XPL transmission 3j66z183017

- and it was the 81307th produced 3j66z183017

From the chassis number you seem to have

- built in 63 February 63b-66-15g-722551-1-4

- 4 door LTD hardtop with bench seats 63b-66-15g-722551-1-4

I do not know what the other numbers mean.

I have been told that the websites contain errors when interpreting these numbers.

Again I am new at this and am not much help.

If you want to know what options came with your car I have been told that you need to get a Marti Report

Good luck with you project

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

Do you know the total history of the car? Maybe the chassis is not original to the body. The VIN seems to indicate a 63 1/2 Galaxie 500 two door fastback with a 4V 390. Post up some pictures.

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

Hopefully I can get you what you want. One thing that was missing from your post is the paint code which would have been one or two letters depending on whether your car is two tone or not. Where do you live in the UK? OK, here's the decode, some of which was correct before: 3 = 1963 model year. J = Los Angeles, California assembly plant. 66 = 2 door hardtop fastback. Z = 390 cubic inch (6.4L) 4bbl carb, dual exhaust, 300 (gross) horsepower FE V8 engine. 183017 = consecutive unit number. 63B = Galaxie 500 bench seat 2 door hardtop fastback. 66 = Black vachette vinyl and crush vinyl interior upholstery and trim. 15G = 15 July 1963 scheduled for assembly date. 72 = San Jose, California district sales office from where the car was ordered. 2551 = Domestic Special Order number - the car was specially ordered, not just bought off the dealer's lot. Unfortunately, Ford threw away all of their records prior to 1967 model year so no further information on your special order car exsists unless you get lucky and find the build sheet. 1 = 3.00 Ford 9 inch non-limited slip axle. 4 = Cruise-O-Matic 3 speed automatic transmission. Hope this helps! If you find the exterior paint code(s) pass them along. Cheers!

Thankyou that is brilliant. The car is black now but originally was a light metallic green with a vinyl roof i think theres no sign of a paint code anywhere but inside of doors and underneath are green

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

It sounds like you already know this, but the warranty plate from which all of the information you have supplied us (excepting the exterior colour code) would have been located on the driver's door mount pillar directly above the oval hole where door courtesy light wiring conduit would have been routed had your car been a Galaxie 500 XL. The fact that your car has been resprayed and the plate being missing may be tied together as you surmized. 1963 model year Galaxie green paint colours include Code D, Ming Green, a Medium Turquoise Metallic, and Code P, Silver Moss, a Medium Green Metallic. Black is Code A and is called Raven Black. The good news is that you can have an exact reproduction of the warranty plate made by Kevin Marti Auto Works for $27 (about 21 quid at today's exchange rate). The correct rivets are also available for $1.50 each. Lead time is 4 - 6 weeks. There is some requirement for you to prove your car is what you say it is, and I'm not sure how you do that without the original tag, but there must be some way and I'm sure they will tell you. The Marti Report that Auguste suggested is not available for any cars built prior to the 1967 model year and is therefore not available for yours as I mentioned in discussing your DSO in my previous post. Hope you find this information useful. Cheers!

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

Thanks, I can get a mustang specialist in the UK to get a plate made up as I have a friend that works there. As for proof the car has the chassis no. which matches the info in the original owners manual so its lucky I have that or I'd never of found any info out.

Re: vin decode and warranty no.

Are you working on a concourse restoration? The reason I ask is because there appears to be just the slightest variation between the '63 Galaxie warranty plate and the Gen 1 Mustang one. The major features are the same and most people wouldn't notice the difference - so if you're not shooting for absolute perfection then a Gen 1 Mustang one would be fine. I think you are right about the original colour being Silver Moss. I have a '63 Ford Facts and Features Manual that shows Silver Moss being available with your "66" interior trim code, but not Ming Green. Of course, the reality back in the day was that a the customer could special order pretty much anything they wanted through the DSO progrm and Ford would build it for them. I seem to recall (but cannot, at the moment find in writing) that the two vinyl roof colours available were black and white. Black would have been appropriate for your car with your "66" trim, but you never know. Vinyl top cars had an extra bit of chrome trim at the back where the top breaks downward toward the rear deck. According to my '63 Accessory Price List, the vinyl roof option cost an additional $75.80. I wonder if your DSO has anything to do with the vinyl top? It could, but there's no way to know.
