Ford Galaxie 500 does not start.
Hi I bought a ford galaxie 500 1964 with 289 engine that wont start.
When I first got the vehicle the engine turned over a little to slow but almost started but a week later it did not turned over at all a month later I cleaned the battery terminals and hooked my + cable up to my starter solenoid but was loose so when I turned the key the engine turned of but sparks flew from the loose nut I tightned it up then turned the key again it cranked very slowly and the lights dimed put a charger on it cranked 3 times then I lost all electrical power so later I use a power station to bypass the starter solenoid and it turned way to slow and I also notice that the fan was not moving the belt was just sliding over. ( It is about 20 degrees when I by passed the starter solenoid.)
I am wondering what is wrong with this vehicle.

Re: Ford Galaxie 500 does not start.
mny questions.
1.how old is the battery?
2.how long has the car been setting?
3.fan dose not turn, sounds like water pump frozen, rust or water
4.starter could be "draging"(new starter needed?
5.how much do you know about cars?
6.use a voltmeter to check all of the starter circuits and wiring.
this is just a starting point, remember you can have 100 cars with the same problem and 99 of them will be the same thing but that 1 will be something totaly different. good luck.

FROZEN water pump....
Lots of problems. First off, take off the belts and then crank it over, But do not start it until you have replaced your waterpump.
Secondly, clean ALL the grounds to the block and frame, then to the battery, and also to the Positive posts and their respective terminals.

I am wondering what's wrong with this picture!
Welcome to FM, we'll get you squared away.
WHY DOES THE WATER PUMP NOT TURN??? New and 20* outside means FROZEN if you only have WATER in the engine.
Is there any antifreeze?
If the water pump is new it will spin, if it is BAD it will spin and leak, if it is rusted out in the bearings or frozen in water it will NOT spin...
So you could also have worn out the starter if it's NOT frozen and it still drags ass trying to crank over.
We need more info, and you likely need a new starter now....

Re: Ford Galaxie 500 does not start.
WOW, this just get's better all the time....
Please describe this "PLACE" that you put the antifreeze and um, maybe start taking pictures and pointing for us...
Since you're so new to all this, our advice would indeed be much better if we could interpret your posts and better identify the true culprit of misadventure which prevents your car from starting.
Also, when you said you turned the car over a LOT, how much was a LOT and did the starter get hot on you?

I think one time I tried for 20 secs which is probably bad for a starter but it did almost fire I think it was because the points were not set since my brother replaced them before I bought it from him he also replaced the ignition switch.

Re: Ford Galaxie 500 does not start.
Open your points up to a gap to about .25 to .30.
30 seconds is as long as I recommend cranking ANY engine with a starter, as they will get hot and need about 4 or 5 minutes to dissipate the heat.
Open that point gap, make sure the conenser is hoked up properly, then try it again.

Pictures by ElrudeIV - Photobucket Here are pictures of my car.
Pictures by ElrudeIV - Photobucket And this is a picture of my engine.
The green arrow is were the antifreeze is suppose to go and the cap should have a tube going to it. The black arrow is were the nut was loose and started to spark and I have to find were the waterpump is.

I read that the point gap for a V8 is .18

Re: Ford Galaxie 500 does not start.
Start a new one and ignore the .18 gap and go .22 or .25
