how long does a 5 galloon propane tank last?

i got my first very own BBQ pit and it has a 5 galloon tank to it. i'm just wondering how long do these size tanks usually last for? i know this sounds stupid but i don't know.

i just don't wanna be out there grilling up a storm and i run out of propane. so i wanna fill her up before that happens. so far i've grilled for at least 3.5-5 hours on it. and i'm grill chicken at the moment and the propane take is making whining noises. is that a sign of the grill wanting to run out of leaking?

again, i know this sounds stupid but hey, i don't know. anybody a propane BBQ'ing experts here?

maybe i should call up "STRICTLAND PROPANE", and ask to speak with "Hank Hill".

This is Hank Hill, How Can I help you today?

Seriously though, run her till she's dry... get a spare 5 gallon tank, you can tell when she's low by the weight of the tank and the liquid sliding around. You should get a good 2 weeks of grillin' & Chillin' on one tank...

2 weeks huh? is that bbq'ing everyday? do you think thats maybe 10 hours worth of grilling?

i think if i get another tank, it'll be a good idea. i think another tank is like 12 dollars plus filling her up. i mean i do grill a few times a week because it tastes so good to have grilled food instead of frying pan food.

Depends on what the burners look like and how many BTU's they throw.
In my experience, a typical 20 pound tank that comes with most BBQ's can last up to about 3 months doing maybe 8-10 hours of use a month on a grill that's rated at 20,000 BTU's. I usually have them on full blast to heat up and sear, then turn them down for cooking to about half throttle.

You're in a higher altitude too so that will affect usage as well.

Way too many variables to try and guess your usage, X. I always keep a loaded spare tank for a fast swap. After you've had a few grilles that used to come with new tanks, you get plenty of spares built up!

Truer word were never spoke! I would have been disappointed if the chillmeister had not jumped in with sage advice on outdoor meat preparation.

Long live sleeved meats!

Make mine extra crispy!

okay, here's another question while we're on the subject. Has anyone ever gotten a bad tank of propane? My last tank doesn't pack any punch - it's like there's less pressure or something and the burners on high act like they're on medium. I think I got some low-grade street propane that got stepped on by the dealer or something. I think he cut it with argon

oh yeah - make sure you turn off the gas at the tank between uses, can't tell you how many times I've gone to mine and found an empty tank (and following Chili's law #1, it's always when company is there, margaritas in hand).

Gotta watch that illicit propane market 69convert!

I've had that happen and there must be something about the quality. I've also had some guys not fill the tank up enough.

Put a 20 pounder on it and grill away. I use mine all year, snow, wind and rain. Have a spare (cost to fill around here is $11.00) so I never have to stop for long. Like Phat says, heat er up on high and cook on low.

Sure, 2 weeks... I do a LOT of smoking, and the grill is on probably 8 to 15 hours per week... that's two hours a night sometimes because I'm occasionally too lazy to turn it off right after cooking and I always burn off the grill after coking so I can start fresh without having to clean it the next day...

I could be exaggerating(sp) a little too, it just seems like I'm there every 2 weeks getting a bottle filled....

I love smoked Salmon and Pork Loin, and Brisket!
