Well, I guess it wasn't you....although the timing is about right. You went 145 on I35......you is (were) crazy son! Oh, and in my (our?) little incident,...I wasn't the driver, well at least not until he got a ride downtown and I had to take his car home. Ahhh, the good old days.

if you use the handy dandy RPM calculator on this site and enter 170 mph with a 2.73 gear(fairly common ratio) and 25.2 inch tires it spits out 6188 rpm needed to go 170 which could not happen in a stock emmissions era 455 -sorry

4750 to do 145 with a 28" tire and a 2.73 rear. I was around 5K when I pulled the plug.

So, here's how it went down. I'm working late and heading home down I-35N from Mecham (south). I get on the freeway and get nearly run over by these two Camaros. One was gold and the other black, IIRC. Well, no upstanding T/A owner can just ignore such a breech of etiquette. I promptly went after 'em. I got on their tails about Pharr street and went around them under the 28th underpass. Showed them my tail feathers to the Trinity River bridge, then let off and let them go. I didn't want to go into the old Mixmaster at nearly 150 - I'm not completely stupid. Ok...

While all this is going on, two nice officers are running radar under the 28th street bridge. They nearly choked when three cars go ripping by at subsonic speeds. I never saw 'em.

So, I let up and let the Camaros go on. I proved my point. As soon as I let up, the rear window EXPLODES with red and blue light. I nearly passed out - I knew that I was in a big heap 'o trouble. I pulled over immediately.

The main cop gets out, sputtering "Do you have ANY IDEA how FAST you were going? And I said "About 145". He sputtered some mroe and said "uh, yea, you were. Now SIT THERE and DON'T MOVE." Yessir, rightawaysir. And I did. They asked about my "friends" and I just told the story - just a fool in a red T/A that had to show the chebbies who was boss. Gave them a sketchy description of the cars and then waited for the cuffs and an escort to jail.

Cop #2 says "You're in more trouble than you know." I say "I think I know." Cop #2 "The patrol car maxes out at 145 and you were walking away from us, why did you stop?" I said the part about going into the mixmaster and not being completely stupid and I thought he was going to wet his uniform. Then I said "You guys were running 145 and didn't have your lights on?" "You just sit there, we'll talk more later".

So after about an hour, and misc "you're in deep s@@t" talk from Cop #2, Cop#1 come up and says "Let's talk". "We caught up with your buds. One we finally got on I-35 down by Miller Brewery. The other we ran down about halfway to Dallas on I-30. They are on their way to jail. Now, what to do with you."

Crap, here it comes.

"Today is your lucky day. Since you pulled over, didn't give us any grief and do seem to be rather repentant - I'm going to give you a ticket for 100 in a 50. If I write it higher, the judge will yank your license and tags. If I EVER see this car going 1 MPH over any posted limit, I'll hang your ass out to dry. Go home."

And I did.

That's a pretty good one!

I'll share one of mine. I'll try for the short version.....

I had been teaching for 4-5 years in a town about 40 minutes from where I was living. At the time, I was very caught up in the street racing scene that went on LATE at night out of town, and was doing it on most weekends. Anyway, I drove the mustang to school on a Friday when the kids got out early. And yes, I had the slicks on it from the last street racing session.

Anyway, the secretary, a nice older lady close to retirement had been hounding me for a ride all year. Since it was early release for the kids, I finally gave in and took her for one after school let out. She liked cars when she was young, and was kind of ate up with it. Anyway, we take off down the road nice and slow for a few miles, then come up on a long, open straight stretch of road flanked by nothing but empty fields. I slow down a bit, then jam on it in 2nd, and bang through the gears until well into 4th, which is a somewhat over 100mph. I look over, and she has her hand over her eyes, is taking deep breaths, and making some sort of nervous laugh! Anyway, I shove the car into neutral and coast back down to the 55mph limit. She was all excited, and we had a good time.

Anyway, we cruise down the road for a while, and some brown midsize chevy is coming up behind us pretty fast. Next thing I know, he has one of those Kojack lights spinning around on the dashboard and is pointing his finger at us to pull over! Oh crap.....

He pulled us over at the mouth of a subdivision where some of my students live... and were outside. He gets out of his car, and marches up with this EVIL look on his face. I notice him look really hard at the tires as he approaches the driver's door to see us wearing our school logo shirts and "oh crap" looks on our faces. He goes into a TYRAID! He is yelling about how he was not far behind us, and all of a sudden we just DISAPPEARED away from him.... and how we must have been travelling well in excess of 100mph as his car was doing all it could do, and we just ran away from him. He made mention of the racing slicks, and asked about those. He told us that he wasn't even a traffic cop.... He was a detective, and hadn't even carried a ticket book for six years, but could NOT allow us to abuse the roads like that. He forcefully told me to be IN HIS OFFICE ON MONDAY AT 11:00 SHARP, or he would send a car to arrest me at school. He ran off a list of violations that damn near made my ears bleed! The poor secretary was trying to get him to calm down a little, and take some of the blame, herself.... but he was going OFF! I was as polite and apologetic as I could possibly be, but he was pissed.

Needless to say, I had one ****TY weekend awaiting that day in his office....

Now, a little about that secretary..... She is the type that knows EVERYBODY. She went home and got on the phone with a personal friend of hers, the chief of police. I got a call to come to the office Monday morning, and it was the detective that pulled me over. He chewed me out a little, gave me some props on my fast car, then told me not to bother coming to his office. Just don't be driving the car like that on public roads.... especially with racing slicks. He let me off! I was so excited and relieved, I was practically floating above my footsteps! That secretary really came through! I only worked at that school for a couple more years before moving on. I really miss that lady. She was so cool.

100% true story. Nothing exaggerated.

There are more, but that's probably the worst ticket I got out of.

Exactly. My 100 in a 50 was $80 back then. Now - not even. Lose car, license, $1000 fine, etc. The bar for being bad has been raised way up there. In TX, 20 MPH over comes under the heading of "reckless endangerment". Old guys with hot rods and old cops out here in the middle of west Texas (where the limit is 75 or 80 ) might give some leeway, but around any metro area it's more like "cuff and stuff".

Not necessarily...

Here's a little background...

A few summers ago I ran a guy with a turbocharged Honda. They wanted to run a street tire Mustang for a few bucks.
I was there hanging out. My car had drag radials, but looked and sounded like a mostly stock car with loud exhaust.
My cohorts fronted the money and I said I would take the run.
We ran, I killed him out of the hole, and lifted before the end so he was right on my bumper when we passed the agreed finish line.
They agree they lost, we all go home.

During the next week, they continue to talk smack about how they were force to run a car on a drag radial vs. their street tire'd car, low boost, yada-yada-yada.

They said it was only a 14 second run and my car was overhyped.
I tell them they can do whatever they want to their car, including slicks, and I will run them again at the spot of their choosing for a few more bucks.

My friend and I were determined to embarrass these guys, so we installed his plate system with a 100 shot, and he let me borrow a set of slicks.
So we wait around for them to show, then follow them waaaaaay out into the middle of nowhere. Farmers fields all around, no houses, about a half hour from the nearest "town", which consisted of a post office and a fire hall.

Cop's would never show up out here in the middle of the night(right ) and no traffic to speak of.

The Civic gets there, and we have to wait for them to mount the slicks. The quarter gets measured and marked, and we line up. We both warm up the tires, I flip the switch, and we are getting ready to go.
Then I see headlight in the rear view. I was in the left lane, so I pulled off into the grass. He did the same on the opposite side. The flagger stayed in his car as it was already off the road.

Then the red and blue light come one as they get close.
I figured that was the end...car was gone, so was the license, and what the heck where these cops doing out here?

The cops took each of our licenses and went back to his car. They let us it for quite a while longer than I think it really took them to check us out.
One of them came back, gave me my license back.
He asked me what we were doing.

Nothing, just hanging out and talking cars sir.
"In the middle of the road?"
Yes, Sir.
"Were you street racing?"
No sir.
"Where they?"
Don't know what they were doing sir, I didn't see them street racing though.
"You're sure no one was street racing, huh?"
"No sir"
"Hmph..."

He then gave me back my license, and told me they were going to be patrolling this road and they better not catch me out there anymore.
The other two(racer and flagger) got similar reprimands, and we were sent on our way.

I was shocked that I got off so easy, since "streetracing" (idiots weaving in and out of traffic type) had been in the news in my area lately. We were not those kind of people.
I spend a lot more time at the track now, though.

All true, and the only good "Cop let me off" story I have. Sorry it's so long.

Here is the video of the first run, the only one that got off.

VID PROOF

Race starts about 2 minutes in, the beginning was real-world PINKS-esqe crap talk. Amusing if you want to take the time.
The Civic went on (months of tuning later) to run a 10.9@130 on race gas, meth injection, and a crap load of boost. It usually ran 11.7's with mph in the 120's.

Oh, if any of you guys ever decide to "top out" your cars... roll up the windows first!

A friend and I were in the mustang on evening many years ago, and decided to see how fast it would go with the 3.25 gears that were installed at the time. It had a toploader and 235/60/15 tires. We got it cranked up to 6500 rpm in high gear and all was good.... until the headlinder crashed down over our heads! I guess the Bernoulli Principal was in full effect, as the rush of air past the windows pulled a vacuum on the interior which pulled the headliner down over our eyes! It was a very "puckeriffic" experience! Luckily, there was no major panicking, and we were able to coast back down to a more reasonable speed. The headliner was in GOOD SHAPE. It did not rip.... Those metal rods that it attaches to are what bent! The headliner isn't right to this day, as I never did replace those rods... I just pushed them back into position the best I could.

Do NOT exceed 160mph in a 65-66 mustang with the windows rolled down!

Good Luck!
