3.9 L Ford V/8 Engine

My wife has the desire to own a 2004 Ford T/Bird. Is anyone familiar with the baby 3.9 L engine in these cars ?

It's a decent little V-8. Not really a hot rod motor like the 4.6, but for the T-bird, it makes a great cruiser and isn't that what the 'bird was meant to be all along. On a slightly different note, I think the new generation Thunderbirds would look great with some Torque Thrust D wheels and a little louder exhaust. I'll take mine in white please

Probably you know this already but SVT did a SVT supercharged prototype of the car. No production parts were made, but I'm sure you could fabricate something up. The prototype used a positive displacement Eaton blower that SVT favored (SuperCoupe, Lightning, Cobra) and was reported to make good power.

I think you are right.

About a year ago I was contemplating purchasing a Jag XKR and doing a manual 6 speed conversion on it. I remember reading about the motors quite a bit and some years to avoid though - I can't remember the reasons. If you get heavily interesting in the motors the Jaguar Forums would be a good place to start. The XKR versions made 380-400 hp stock and with altered boost levels would approach 500 hp easily - well over 400hp at the wheels.

The dealer says it has 280 hp stock as is. I'm not crazy about the 5 sp. auto trans. We'll see. If Mama ain't happy, nobody ain't happy.

Yep, the Jaguar XKR versions are supercharged hence the higher stock hp. The 3.9L motor at 280hp stock isn't too shabby.

Re: 3.9 L Ford V/8 Engine

Buy it! I have it in my 2004 T Bird, and in just 1 year I have concluded it is a winner! It has an amazing combination of V8 power and economy. Very snappy when you step on it, and I get 25-27 mpg on the highway! Combined driving I get 18 mpg. My only frustration is I can't work on it or figure out where anything is, so all maintenance is in the shop. Fortunately the only problems I have had in the 1 year of ownership is other Ford components like power steering pump out at 55,00 miles and two A/c services already. Also the original owner replaced 3 coil plug wires at 50,000 miles and I just ordered 5 more as it is a weak point, but not too expensive-kind of a high priced tune up. I just discovered from the internet that the engine was built and designed by Jaguar, and Ford got them for Lincolns and T Birds-small luxury cars.

PS don't pay over $20M for it no matter the mileage. I just researched the current prices and they averaged $15.5M, top end for low mileage $19M. I have noticed the owners who paid the outrageous price of $42M when they came out all think they are still worth half that. I paid over average a year ago for $18.5M but I have one that was well cared for.

Re: 3.9 L Ford V/8 Engine

Worked on quite a few of these before I retired. Only problem I ran across were the coils. Water would run down the cowl to the top of the engine and find its way around the plastic covers and fill the spark plug wells. If i I remember correctly there was a service bulletin or recall addressing that problem. The 5sp trans shifted smoothly and never saw one in the shop for repairs. And compared to the original baby birds they are only marginally better to get in and out of.
