What is a 66 Mustang worth

I know a older lady that has owned since new a 66 Mustang coupe, 289 2bbl automatic.

It was repainted in the early 80's I believe? Paint is cracked and chipped in several places. I don't know how much if any filler is in it? I think it's been garage kept most of its life.

Blue pony interior I think? Thats in very good condition. Might need carpet and a heater core. It was leaking 2 years ago, and she never has asked me to replace it.

It runs and shifts great, and over all it is a very clean coupe. I've been working on it here and there for her as needed for about 5 years.

Anyway, she want's to sell the car now. I told her that I would be interested and she said she will be asking $20000.00. I about crapped myself! She has a brother that might be telling her that its worth that?

I was thinking more of $8G to $10G, maybe im out of touch with the market.
It's not a GT or K code.

So, what would you guys and gals think in Ford Muscle land?
I know hard to judge a car without seeing pictures or the car.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

That mustang imo isn't worth no $20k. Think someone's been watching Barrett Jackson again sounds like. I say, but not a mustang fan, $2000 but everytime I see a mustang around that year, even with rust bubbles under new paint it's automatic $5000. Guess it's what you are willing to pay and I think I'd go find something else before I'd pay that much for that one. Even to be the second owner.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

I'm not making any offers for now. Let her sit on it for awhile longer and see what happens.

Just curious to see what other people think.

I doubt she watches Barret Jackson, but her brother might be.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

The car is a decent little driver and in the bast of instnaces, it's worth about $3,500 in it's current state.

Fully restored 4 or 5 years ago you could almost get $25,000 for them but the average price is closer to $14,000, from all that I've seen of them.

She'll have that car forever with that asking price. Just be the first to her door once she realizes her brother is an imbecile...

And pay no more than $3,000 to $3,500 at the extreme outside.

There are 66 Stangs with 289's and pony interior's all day long on CraigsList in practically every other city for under $5,000. Gotta remember that they made well over one million Mustangs....

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

The only way that thing would be worth $20K would be if it had it's original paint and it was in very good condition. There is nothing special about this car at all. Pony interrior is nice, but a lot of cars came with it. It's not a GT, so just a plain 289 coupe that's worth about $3 to $5k. And yes, her brother is an idiot! But as I said, any older collectible car with it's original paint in good condition will fetch good money because you only get one factory paint job ever.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

Hate to bust y'alls bubble, but NADA prices out a 66 two door at $16.5K average retail. Low retail is nearly $10K.

"Average Retail Value
This vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A "20-footer"."

Our semi-clapped out 70 model is worth around $8K for insurance purposes.

>And pay no more than $3,000 to $3,500 at the extreme outside.

Last one I saw sell for that was in 1995.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

But NADA prices are grossly inflated.... It says my cougar is worth 11-13k and it's not probably 5-6k, I missed a several chances to pick up a second 69 XR7 in just as nice or slightly better condition for 3.5k

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

NADA is for newer cars in my opinion. You can't price older cars because they are either total pieces of crap, decently restored, modified or show cars. We know nothing about this car. It is most likely a 289 driver that is nothing special. Between 3 and 5 thousand is totally reasonable. Buying one locally through the paper or on Craigslist is easy to find. Everyone thinks their car is worth more than it is. And in this economy, it's worth even less. So that NADA book is useless for a 43 year old car that has seen it's ups and downs in value, but in the end is just a plain old coupe that can still be picked up for a decent deal. NADA trying to put a value on a 43 year old car! That makes me laugh

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

Kelly, the Nada guides are STUPENDOUSLY out priced. There's no way in hell that that stang can get that much or even HALF that much no matter what the economy is like...

Repainted in the 80's, racked and chipped paint, needs carpet...

Sound's like a $3,000 dollar car MAXIMUM...

I have a 1999 'cedes SL500 V8, 78,416 mile Hardtop Convertible in Excellent condition in my front yard, Nada has it listed at $14,075... I see them NOT selling all the time on fleabay and C/L for $7,500....

Nada is crap for valuations...
Look at fleabay, there are 105 66 mustangs for sale... Only ones going higher than $5K are restored OR a Fastback or a GT....

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

Without seeing it, I'd say $5000-$7000 if it runs good.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

If the heater core has leaked for the last 2 years, I look to see if it had a floor under that carpet. If that car is all there,it is worth some money.

Re: What is a 66 Mustang worth

I'm going to move my chair to the low side of the fence and sit in the cheap seats.

Geography might have a hand in this, but a plain Jane '65 '66 Coupe that is not in tip top pristine condition just isn't going to bring those high numbers, if it sells at all. There may be someone out there that would pay that big ticket price, but I doubt anyone on this board would pay over $10k for for a clean Coupe, let alone one that is at best in Good overall condition.

I have a customer that just paid $4500 for a Plane Jane '71 Fastback and he is pleased as punch about it. He brought the car by the office for us to ogle the other day. I was polite, but I would not have paid $4500 for this car.

Paint was cracked and chipped (white paint, the hider of all body sins), seats were ripped, dash was cracked. But the engine (302 2v) had a fresh coat of Ford blue on it, including vacuum tee's and wires. And, it smoked.

Some people may pay the price and believe they got a deal. Turnip trucks are full of 'em. Just that the turnip truck doesn't come to town near often enough.
