Found: 1970 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet w/Ram Air

Picture this...Your driving on some random back country road to take the "scenic route" with your wife on the way to grab some groceries. Your friend that knows nothing about classic mustangs tipped you off about what he thought looked like a mustang out in field. He couldn't really tell you what it was, but that it looked cool. So, you think, I might as well check it out while on the way to go shopping--it will make a good drive with your wife anyhow(she doesn't mind tagging along when trying to find a classic car). You find the field and the car he was talking about. Before you even get with in a hundred feet off it, you know its got to be a Mach 1, '69 or '70 year. As you get close, you notice cobra emblems on the front quarter panels behind the wheel wheels and on the rear of the car. You don't get too excited because you know that it is somewhat common for someone to buy emblems and just stick them on. So, you walk around to look at the dash vin number instantly scanning to the engine code where it has "R". So you are getting excited. You open the driver side door, and sure enough, the data plate tag matches the dash vin number. Now, you are exited. You then decide to pop the hood--which is a ram air hood--and...the engine compartment is empty. No engine, not trans. But, you make a final check at the vin number above the wheel well that is stamped into the metal in the engine compartment, and it matches as well.

So, you do have a good find, but no engine or trans. The body is in better shape than most, but not great. The interior isn't all that bad. It will need to be redone, but you've seen far worse. You notice it used to be a manual tranny. It has the orginal wheel rims. The glass is in good shape. And although it looked like someone tried to do some bondo work on one of the panels, it doesn't have too bad of rust.

The question is...how much do you offer the owner for a 1970 Mach 1 428 Cobra jet w/ram air rolling body (without the original engine and tranny)???? How much is this worth roughly?????? How much restored???

Here is the vin number I ran and and the data plate codes that I could read...

Since it's sitting out in a field, you never know, you might get it for next to nothing.

Just a little heads up info.

If you haven't spoken to the property owner yet, start by asking if you can look at the car and act as if it's the first time you've seen it up close.

In the past I've had someone make me an offer on a vehicle that was not in public view and the first thing that went through my mind is that they had no business being on my property in the first place. Especially when I'm not around.

Ditto on Brians S's post. Be smart on your approach. It can be a big negative. Maybe ask if its forsale and ask if you can get a closer look first. Play dumb and ask what engine is in it or if it runs...that way you will already be ahead of the game if its up for the taking..

BTW where is this car? lol.. JK

I hate that answer. There's a salvage yard here in town that has a 73 Mach 1 just sitting there. It's the owners son, who plans to "fix" it up one day, yet he takes the bus everyday for the last 30 years because he's too poor to afford a car. I offered to buy pieces or the whole car by part.... I got the same answer. I think somewhere down the road, all of us have seen a car, wanted it and got that answer.

Re: Found: 1970 Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet w/Ram Air

Use your head. You may or may not be the first one to see it.If the guy likes you, you can score big.Find a common ground w/him and just be honest. With some people it's not about the $$.People always like it when others show respect & interest in something they have.Like BrianS said go knock on his door and introduce yourself.(JW's do it)
I scored my first stang that way.a 73 mach 1 was sitting in a driveway for 10 yrs ,his neighbors on both sides wanted it and he turned $4000 from one of them.I come along never met him but knew this contractor who built a BBQ pit and next thing you know, i strike a deal for $1600 and a cord of wood!!LOL The kicker was that he was the original owner , bought it when he was 19 and it only had 64,000 miles on it.(Q code 351, 71K now) that was 4yrs ago and he still waiting for me to finish it, I promised him the second test drive this year when I finish.
Tell this guy how much you like it ,that you've always wanted to restore one...all the work it's going to take etc.,etc, You never know he might have the motor & tranny out back somewhere. If you don't have much to offer $ wise trade or barter something he wants or needs. But do it quick B4 someone else sees it also....I think i might know what field your talking about.....
