Winter Storage
Okay, so the time of year is comming around when many start to think about parking their prized cars for the winter. I was wondering what kind of things guys/gals choose to do in preparation and why?
I have a bald set of tires on rusty/chrome steel rims that I will slap on and store my aluminum rims inside for the winter. I was also thinking of draining the coolant, although I was thinking that may dry out some gaskets, is that true? Other options?
Cheers
kevin

Re: Winter Storage
the mustangs get started every ten days or so and warmed up enough to dry the exhaust, down the driveway turn around to roll the tires, dragging the brakes to wipe some of the rust off, steer full left/right to keep the rack seals lubed, cycle the ac, etc...
didnt last winter, but think I'm gonna either paint the floor or at least put a oscillating fan on the floor to keep the air moving- either should help keep moisture from the cement away...thinking a fan may be best. full tank of 89 with sta-bil.
I always keep lights/radio on in the garage- accidentally noticed this keeps mice away...used to have big problems with that at our old house- detached garage was dark/quiet, had mice around too often in winter...went on vacation one winter, forgot to kill the lights/radio on purpose so it didnt look empty, but came home to no mice...compact flourescent bulbs last for years if not shut off, and a old clock radio keeps some noise...dunno if either or both ran the mice off, but never had a problem here and dont need one, so still do it

Re: Winter Storage
Buy a can of Sta-Bil, pop it in the tank drive it for a half hour then park the thing.
No further attention needed.
Don't forget to go look at it and touch it a lot...
Or do what I do. Drive the car every single day of your entire life Drive it and love it!

Re: Winter Storage
Every thing I put Stabil in I had to tear apart and clean the carburetor. Snow blower, lawn mowers, generator. I never put it in my car.
And yes, I ran it through before storage.

Re: Winter Storage
I never had an issue with it. What did it do to your rigs?

Re: Winter Storage
It gummed everything up and left residue. Needle jets plugged, float bowl full of crap, lines not flowing etc.

Re: Winter Storage
I'm thinking there was maybe something else that might have contaminated it...
I've not had issues but I never set one sit more than about 8 months with it in the tank. (Deployment time)

Re: Winter Storage
I use Seafoam in my gasoline power vehicles. Never a problem. I pour in the tank and run them for ten minutes and call it good. I use it on every thing. Do a search on it , Good stuff. I will just be getting my car running just in time for two shows then to the garage. I put dryer sheets it it. Seems to help with critters. Just found a place to store my motorhome. Then it will be time to get the snowmobiles running. Hope to have my Galaxie in my house garage this year so I can actually work on it. Son had his cougar in all winter and worked on it two days.

Re: Winter Storage
Since we're on the topic of long term storage, anyone fog the cylinders with oil by pouring a little 30w down the carb while running? Anyone think it's necessary for long term?

Re: Winter Storage
I think it's totally unnecessary to fog the cyl's. unless you keep your car in a boat shack where it's always got moisture soaking everything up in the mornings and cold evenings...

Re: Winter Storage
I don't leave my winders open when it's going to hit the dew point for my humidity range....

That is exactly what fuel stabilizers are used to prevent.
I use fuel stabilizer in my snowmobile for summer storage, and I've also used it in my car for winter storage. I didn't have any problems with the car for the years that I did not use stabilizer and I disassemble and clean the snowmobile carbs before every season, but the fresher gas makes getting things underway a little better.
I fog the engine in the snowmobile with specific fogging, or engine storage oil. This would seem to be more critical in a two stroke engine with roller type crank bearings. The fogging oil clings to the surfaces better than regular injection oil, so it will provide a longer lasting film on the surfaces while it sits.
