bought 63 mercury comet convertible, new to cars

hello gang. i just bought a 63 comet, new to old cars. looking for direction as to what to consider when pairing up engine/tranny/carb, dont know how to tell which parts will fit on which. car runs good, but slips out of park, and top speed is only about 50 mph. trying to find how to calibrate parts for better driving, not to be a racecar, but to accelerate better, and to comfortable cruise the highway at 70mph or so. thanks alot for the help.

You'll get better response if you post this in the model specific forum. The Garage forum is not intended for these types of questions and there will probably be more traffic in the other forums.
