428 police interceptor

I have the opportunity to get a 428 pi engine. Uncertain what year, intake or cam as of yet. He also has an extra new crank and a pair of cylinder heads all for 400$. An older collector that just wants it gone.

Is it worth it, from a performance standpoint? Or should I get another FE that's just as good?

Sure sounds like it, unless it's seized up or cracked. I'd go for it if I had the chance.

Assuming everything is legit and it will sonic test well, is there any real performance benefit or associated strength with a 428 pi block, that I couldn't get with a standard 390FTE , 428 cj or mirror 105 block?

Wasn't even close to doing the engine yet on the 65 Gal but this could be a good opportunity.

Jump on that deal! That's a steal as long as there are no holes where they shouldn't be.

Re: 428 police interceptor

the "extra crank" alone is worth $200-250.
for $400, i'd have already gone to get it.

Depends how far it is currently bored out . If it's at the max, the block is junk.

Going to look at tomorrow morning. He's uncertain what year it is and possibly may have a sleeve crack.

He thinks it's a 66, but the intake is cast iron. Got a feeling it may be a Frankenstein motor.

Re: 428 police interceptor

It could have a cast iron intake if it were a '69-70 . They used the cast iron CJ intake C8OE casting numbered. Look for the A or C scratch mark in the bellhousing area as well. I don't see how you can lose on this one unless it's a 390 in disguise.

C6me-a , standard bore 390. No reinforced webbing, not even a 428 let alone a PI or CJ engine.

He had no idea and was sold and payed extra for what he thought was hipo engine.

That's worth $400.00 all day long if you need one.
