Brake Lights Out

About a year ago, someone told me my brake lights were out on my 64 Galaxie. I pulled into my garage, checked them, and they worked.

Last night, same thing, but now they definitely are out.

MAC's shows a brake light switch in their catalog.

Where is the switch located? Can A 73 year old reach it, or do you need to be a contortionist?

Thanks.

Re: Brake Lights Out

The brake light switch is screwed into the master cylinder if you still have the stock brake system. Very easy to get to it. It is just in front of the lid on the top of the master.

Re: Brake Lights Out

it could also be the turn signal switch- the brake lights go through it, also.

Re: Brake Lights Out

It could be as simple as a blown brake light circuit fuse or a bad ground. I would use a volt meter or multi-meter to test for battery voltage at the tail lamp sockets. Use a stick or buddy to hold the brake pedal applied. Go from there.

I see the switch. It's the original circular/screw in type.

Is there any sense to removing the two wires and jumping them to see if the lights work?

I don't have any meters to check st the tail light end.

Scott, directionals work fine. Does that remove the potential turn signal issue?

Re: Brake Lights Out

Every now and then, you get lucky.

I crimped the wire connections on the switch, and the lights now work. (One was too loose.)

I appreciate the suggestions/advice.

On to next Sunday's car show!!

Glad you got it working! it's usually something simple, and you just have to find it. For future stuff; certainly check the easy and obvious, such as your jumper test, checking the circuit fuse(s), etc. If that fails, then I go to the meter (even a $1 store test light works) to go to each end of the circuit looking for failure (no power) and work my way in to locate it. Easy stuff first.

Re: Brake Lights Out

OK, maybe this is weird, or maybe it's normal.

Got into the car today to ensure all was well. Here's what happened:

1) ignition key "off".

2) directional to the right in the "on" position.

3) hit brake lights

4) right side brake lights doesn't work.

5) turn off right side directional

6) everything works OK

Try it on your Galaxie, and tell me it's normal.
