I picked up my heads today and got the results of the flow tests. I spent waaaay too many hours porting these suckers, but it was a learning experience and generally therapeutic. The valves are 1.90"/1.60".

Here's what a moron with a grinder can accomplish, tested @ 28" H2O:

Intake:
Lift - Stock/Ported
.10 - 58.7 / 63
.20 - 105.6 / 116
.30 - 152 / 169
.40 - 171 / 199
.50 - 181 / 211
.60 - 189 / 211

Exhaust
.10 - 51.8 / 51
.20 - 90.4 / 97
.30 - 106.8 / 122
.40 - 112.9 / 134
.50 - 114.8 / 143
.60 - 115.4 / 146

FWIW, not too bad for an amateur and better than what I had.

Here's a few pics after and a before. There's a lot of metal in that freakin' hump. I smoothed out the chambers quite a bit as well. Tons of fun!

Somewhere between 20-30 hours I'd wager. It was on-again/off-again so I can't say for sure. Between them and other projects it dragged out over the course of a month.

The first 50% of the first head I ported was slow as heck - then I got a set of carbide burrs at Sears. The burrs knock down the big stuff so much faster (and more accurately) than a stone or cartridge roll.

I almost bought a set of used World Jr heads for $400. With the valves and all I've got about that much in these. And I did it myself. They'll be great in my old Bronco.

I had this post on here for a few years. Some of links to the pics don't work anymore because I deleted the files some time ago to make room for others. There is a pic of the exhaust ports here though. My Intakes and Exhausts measured 160cc and 60cc, respectively when I was done. I never had the heads flowed...wish I did, inquiring minds want to know. They sure do work well on my 331 though. I used a few carbide bits and an air driven die grinder and got 'em done in about 11 hours. Later on when I rebuilt the engine, I put another 3-4 hours into them to fix irregularities and do some valve unshrouding.

Remember this, If you dont mill the crap out of them, the gain you picked up from the porting will be almost meaningless. Those chambers are very big now, so your compression went way down. I have seen this happen many times where someone puts 351 heads on a smaller motor and the performance stays just about the same. Dont forget that compression is VERY important;

I am so glad to hear that i am not the only ford motor head, that still uses iron heads with the skills to put a die grinder to work on a iron head. I am 58 years old and hopes that the skills of days gone by are not lost. I have taken a set of d0oe 351 heads closer to 20 hours (yes taking my time) place a set 1.94/1.60 values, screw-in studs, guide plates, and a good set of springs. The hours with the die grinder after the seats were put in to remove all that could be taken out of the intake and exhaust. The 563/584 lift and 294/302 retro-fitted crane cam works well with it along with the air gap intake and holley street avenger carb.

How come its mostly us old farts that still believe that making power is better than buying it? I turned 60 in September so you are only a couple of years behind me. Maybe we do what we do because when we started there weren't aftermarket heads and we learned how to make what we had breath. I still like taking the credit for the HP I make rather than paying someone else to make it for me.

Cause us old farts (55) had to make it work, not buy something made for us. Factory stuff was all there was for a long time. Remember NASCAR in the 50-60s? Go down tot he dealership and buy the car then modifiy for racing, yeah right, like to see that how.
That's why a lot of the old school skills are fading away.

Yep, I run a 82 Merc Zephyr with a 460, C-6, 9" detroit with 4.30 gears. 10-1 comp, Crower solid cam with only .560" lift, Edelbrock RPM Manifold and a Holley 850 that I removed the airhorn myself and cleaned up the throats. Cast iron DOVE heads I ported myself and had CJ valves installed. ACCEL Unilite, and long tube header. Frame connectors I built cause no one makes them, and I ran consistitently 11.11-11.14 ET @ 120-121.5 mph. 60' time was 1.58-1.61 depending on time of day, temp wise. All Ford bottom end and shifted at 6200 rpms
Chevy folks couldn't figure out how I could run that fast with 10-1 comp and iron heads, and mild cam? Use to piss them off when I beat them. RT was .513-.525 a practice tree was helpful there.
Home porting and blueprinting, you bet I do my own.

At 44 I had my first hot rod before there were aftermarket heads available and ported my own 351w heads. There is some good satisfaction in it and may do it again. I bought heads for my current motor and felt a little guilty. Fortunately I built everything else. The thing I hate is the total bill for building 40 year old castings with all new parts+machine shop bill for converting to screw in studs/guide plates, guides, valve seats and valve job. My old heads from 25 years ago are still in the family and would like to give them another shot. My nephew used them for a while, but I still have access to them. They went 6.70s on a 306 with a big solid and 200 shot then in a Mustang II.

LOL I have to bring this back up.

I live in a somewhat small town in Missouri but it's cool as he!! out of about 13,000 people we have about 40 drag racers and a bunch of us are 50 or older now don't get me wrong we for the most part have all went to after market heads and such but we for the most part build our own motors.

A buddy of mine that has been racing for 30 years has a 68 mustang that he had a 306 in with a a set of ported d3oe 351w heads now he did not port them himself but a guy right here in town did he builds a lot of circle track stuff for local racers but I really think he can see air flow thru a head the guy is odd as hell but you talk about good.

He!! he milled so much off the heads my buddy GET THIS TOOK A SAWS ALL AND A DISC GRINDER TO HIS INTAKE......LOL

Stock rods and hyper pistons with a dome, isky cam.

Anyway the car ran 11.60s at 114 if I remember right on airplane gas.......

Just the thread I needed. When I was 18 back in 2001 I ported the 289 heads im running now which made 270rwhp and will be porting a set of 69 351w heads for the same motor. Its very nice being at the track with iron heads you ported yourself and people get surprised that's all it has with an 8.2 on the 1/8mile. With the great aluminum heads out its so expected to make power its nothing special and just shows you had the money not skills.

There is a guy that ported a set of 351w heads over on speedtalk.com. With the help of a couple of pros, he got 252 cfm out of a 160cc ported intake port. You know how efficient that is for a 160cc port?! My ports are 160cc also after I ported them...I don't think they are flowing 252, but they are definitely doin' the job.
