which 5.0 is best

hello
i know this has probably been covered somewhere in this forum but i am gonna ask again. which year 5.0 is best to transplant into a 66 mustang. i was told 87 was the best year because it is supposedly the highest hp rated 5.0 built. i also heard 89-93 because of the maf air system instead of the speed density. so i am not sure which way to go. or better yet would it be better for me to buy an efi setup and install it on my 289. i am pretty sure it will bolt up without any problem.

You're missing some qualifying Verbs there dude.

Like what do you want to do with it?

Do you just want the most powerful engine you can grab or the one that's most build able? Something like that?

sorry bout that what i want is to have it setup where i can drive it daily but i also want it to have enough in it to run it on the strip when i want.

The 87-92 HO are the best engines, they have forged TRW pistons with valve reliefs so you can install mild performance cams in them without fly cutting the pistons. The 89-92 HO also have MAF but you can retro fit 87-88 with MAF from a later model. Explorer 5.0 motors with GT40 heads also make good power but they don't have the forged pistons with reliefs thus they can't use performance cams without valve clearance issues.

93 SVT, if you are not going to 'molest' it. Otherwise, it pretty much a toss-up. However, I would suggest not getting anything above '94 or below '87 (if your heart is set on EFI), the above '94 have that strange intake throttle body and the '86 has head/valve problems that you shouldn't mess with unless you have to.

I just installed a 94GT motor in my 86GT, the only things I had to change were the front nose asymbly, in which I used from the original 86 motor and the intake upper and lower asymbly also from the 86. I beat this thing every weekend at the local dragstrip.

Hey there, if your just looking for the good running characteristics of EFI and your engine is already in top shape, why not try going with one of these setups. It was covered on FORD MUSCLE a ways back. If i could get the cash together thats what id do. I just like the Carberator look better that i do the EFI look. But thats just me.

If looking to swap the whole thing, the Explorer GT40 engine may be worth looking at, as it has the better manifold, heads, and the shortest set of accessories and brackets that may ease your installation. It's a good combination for swaps, easier to find, and generally cheaper as well. Worth considering based on your needs.
