'69 Fairlane Cobra

Here is my '69 Torino Cobra in the body shop. I've been working on this for several years now, partly because I keep adding to the work (like converting to a manual trans).

Here's the current build:
Color will be Lime Gold Metallic, but from the new Mustang
416 FE engine (390+.030 bore w/428 crank, maybe one day I'll bust the bucks for a 428 block)
Ross flattop pistons CR ~10.3:1
Edelbrock heads w/Ferrea valves
Erson rockers
Crane Hyd. roller cam (the smaller of the 2, ~224 @.050 intake)
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Holley Street Avenger 770
Tremec TKO600 trans
Converted to power disc brakes, thanks to parts from a '70 Montego
I'll probably get some American Racing Torq Thrusts, maybe 17"

I'm seriously considering some fuel injection, using the MegaSquirt system since Edelbrock now has a Victor EFI intake for FE's. I'll get the car back together and drive it a bit before doing this though.

Thumbs up Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

Can you tell us more about your project? Mine was at that stage once too, and I know there's more to tell! hehe. Give us the low down. Also, what motor and transmission you got in there?

Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

OK, car is back from the body shop with the Lime Gold metallic from the '06 Mustang (similar to the 60's hue but seemed to have more "life"). BTW car was originally Meadowlark Yellow.

Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

It's been a loooong time since I posted an update! During the "work on car" season, I feel so pressured to get as much done as possible I don't take any pictures. Also, there's not much room or light in the garage to get any decent photos of the whole car. Since the last update, I installed a new wiring harness, finished a good bit of interior re-installation, got the electric fans mounted, got the A/C mounted and hoses cut (need crimping still), pretty much all of the trim is refurbished and back on, and many other little odds and ends. About the only picture I have now is the seats that I had recovered. The front seats are out of an '04 Mustang V6 while the rears are original. I wanted to break up the all black interior, since when you look into the car it's like a black hole - you can't see anything in the car. So I had some custom stitchwork done to help that situation and add a personal touch to the car. Here's the seats. I'm trying to get the car into a running condition again by the end of the month, but that may be too aggressive. I've gotta work quick, today is 90 degrees and the summer hiatus is almost here. Then I have to spend six months thinking about working on the car again (summer in Phoenix is complete hell).

Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

Slowly making more progress. I installed a Global West Negative Roll control arm on the driver's side and cutting a coil out to lower the front, still need to do the other side but space is tight over there. I got the side windows in but have some alignment issues with them. I also replaced the shackles on the leaf springs, replacing the Skyjackers that someone had put on in the past - major improvement to get the car back down to a reasonable height. I also got some 17x8 wheels and fitted them with 245/45ZR17 tires all the way around and got 3 of them on. After that I found out that the tires are directional, and with my luck I had put them all on the wrong sides. Anyway, here's the new wheels and tires.

1st pic is before, the 2 following are after.

Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

I've been working pretty hard lately on the car again since the weather has cooled off here and I've taken some vacation time. I'm getting close to the shakedown drives. I have a few things to finish, like the toe-in adjustment and putting the dash and shifter plate in when the chromers are done, as well as the weatherstripping. The biggest job is what I'm working on now, I have to change the valvesprings as the springs recommended by the cam manufacturer are completely inadequate. Anyway, here's what it's looking like. The hood and top are very dusty, I'll have to wash it but can't until the weatherstripping is done (I wipe the fenders off before I work in the engine bay).

Re: '69 Fairlane Cobra

I got it registered and have been driving it a bit now and finally

washed it. I've found a good number of little items to fix, and am working through them, but so far the only thing that I'm all that worried about it a fluid drip from the bottom of the bellhousing. It's not very much, but it could be fluid from the hydraulic throwout bearing. It could also just be oil from the engine or oil pan area, so I need to accumulate a bit to be able to tell. I'll get some more interior pictures whenever I get some of the parts back from the platers so I can put the dash back on. These pictures were taken on an overcast day, so the color looks a bit dull.
