Not a whole lot to say here. I got the motor out in this pic and I'm swapping it for another one. Just until I get this one rebuilt. I'm sorry to say that I really don't know which direction I'm going with this bad boy. It's hard to keep it original when there are so many aftermarket parts. So I'm swapping a different 390 that I can tweak on a bit. I'm taking the motor from the car in my Signature.
Got the motor and trans pulled. Removed the valve covers and noticed a bad valve seal and some visual damage to the seal and a broke spring retainer or what ever it's called.
So I pulled the original 390 and was going to swap a running 390 out of a galaxie 500.... Then I bought a 94 GT and stripped it down for a 5.0 EFI swap..... Then I found a 99 cobra 4.6 4v for a good deal and that's where I'm at now. I sold my 390 setup for a profit. Sold my 5.0 turbo setup and broke even. Just had the car and motor transported so I can tinker after hours in the shade and at night.
I pulled the driver's side door fender front bumper and lower valance yesterday. I snuck in a few pictures of the motor. Today I pulled the interior on the driver's side. I got the driver's seat out center console overhead console and half the carpet out. I'm going to turn the car around and do the other side tomorrow. Bagging and labeling every nut and bolt. Boxing bagged nuts and bolts into sections. It takes more time but it's worth it.
If anyone has any pointers or tips I'm all ears.
I'm planning on sand blasting the front headlight bezzel and whatever else can fit in there. Is that the right way to do it?
If the FE fit the 4.6 4v will fit as well. Is actually a lot lighter engine. Throw a Whipple charger on it and you will have one wild ride. Love the new into old!
Going to be tight. A 4.6 4v is 30 inches wide... my frame rails are around 27 inches... doesn't leave alot of room. The 4v are wider than the FE's I would think. Actually upon research, the 4v is 3 inches wider.

I had a 460 in my 67 when I bought it. It is 27 inches wide, and I don't think there was more than a 1/2 inch clearance between the shock towers and the plugs.
To the O/P... sorry to trash your thread, just interested in your plans to fit the engine.
Bill
Update... My interior is out and it looks like my weather stripping failed horribly on the passenger side. I need to replace the passenger side floor pan because it looks like a pool of water was just chilling in there and it rusted through. I have some more rust in the engine compartment where the battery tray was and that went all the way through. Both doors skins are rusted in the lower corners near the drain holes Other than that everything else looks decent. Alot of surface rust here and there.
No worries Billy. I welcome comments on here and I don't consider it thread trashing. I actually watched an episode of stacey david's gears last weekend and he did the prep for a 4.6 mod motor in a 68 cougar. After seeing all that work, cutting and welding. I don't think I can bring myself to hacking up my car like that. All that removal of shock towers sway bar mount ect will make the car so it can never go back to stock and I don't think I want to do that with a GT Fastback. So back to the 5.0 turbo setup I guess. Good thing my buddy didn't pay me for it yet.
I managed to squeeze a brake booster from a 1994 Gt into my 1968 Gt. I made a mount and drilled a few holes in the firewall and pedal assembly. Here are a few pictures.
