Re: Best headers for 428?

Hooker is probably one of the most readily avaliable 428 headers, as far as being the best, i'd question that statment as thier is alot of better stuff avaliable, but generaly not as cheap as the Hookers. A 428 goes in, it was avaliable from the factory with one.

Re: Best headers for 428?

I purchased a set of new "Dougs Headers" ceramic coated for my 71 Mach 1 351c 4 spd. These headers are awesome and the fit was "Bang On"! I have no header leaks and no install issues. I would highly recommend them.

Re: Best headers for 428?

Hooker 6114 if you are running CJ, Edelbrock, or any 427 head

If you are running a C7AE-A head or a C8AE-H head, you need to go with FPA

The exhaust port locations compared to the bolt holes are slightly different between the heads and they dont interchange (although FPA makes a CJ style too)

I personally like 6114 Hookers, they fit nice, and dont hang too low.

In either case, bolt the tranny, engine and headers all together as a unit and install. Slides right in

Re: Best headers for 428?

Thanks!

Yes i was looking at the 6114 at summit racing.

I am a little concerned about the heat headers transmit into the engine bay.
Will the "ceramic" hooker 6114 do anything for the heat or is it just for show?

Also looking at the JBA 6654SJS headers that uses the TRI-Y design.
They takes less room and maybe transmit less heat due to the smaller surface area the tubing has.

Anyone uses the JBA TRI-Y on a 428?

Re: Best headers for 428?

They will all cook unless they are ceramic coated. I ran 6114 without coating, then had them coated. Night and day difference.

Regardless of the brand, go ceramic, underhood of a Mustang just doesnt ventilate well.

Havent used JBA, certainly big bucks and certainly good, but I dont think size and shape will change things significanly.

I used FPA tri-ys on 2 cars, they werent significantly better fitting, matter of fact I had to do some shaping on those (they were Fairlanes) but never on Hookers

Here is a little movie, you can see how low the 6114's hang, the FPAs arent much better

Re: Best headers for 428?

Dang that '70 Fastback is sweet, My427stang!

The Hooker 1-3/4" headers are okay for a mild 428. They fit okay, make good power, and are not too expensive. They are the "best bang for the buck" in this situation. Kind of a sweet spot in terms of hp per $.

For a bigger or higher rpm motor bigger tubes will make more power. Hooker, Hedman, and Crites make 2" or 2-1/8" headers. The Crites are cheap at $320 and make great power but hang very low. The Hooker and Hedman big tube headers are very expensive at $700-$800. I haven't seen them installed in a car so I can't comment on fit.

I'd stay away from tri-y's for anything but the mildest motors. JMO on that.

Ceramic coating is worth every penny. Your tight engine bay needs all the heat reduction help it can get.

I have Crites 2" headers and sent them to Jethot for a Jethot 2000 coating. I sold my Hookers after they made less power at all rpms on the engine dyno on my 517 hp 428.

JMO,

paulie

Thanks alot!!
You convince me of the hooker.

Here is the sound of the 428 with terrible sound of the current headers i got.
Now my headers are of HUGE 2'' tubing welded on place in the engine bay.

So smaller 1.3/4'' hooker and regular 2.5'' steel tubing to the back will sound alot better

The enginge has been in the dyno and put out 470Hp on the crankshaft
The Hooker 1 3/4 must be enough or ??

Re: Best headers for 428?

I run 6114s and 3 inch exhaust with quite a bit more power.

Like Paulie said, for WOT a 2 inch primary pipe will make a little more power, the 1 3/4 will make a little more low end.

I personally like the 6114 for ease of install and fitment, if you are just trying to change sound, I dont know if I'd go as far as a header change, just start experimenting with mufflers

No the sound wasnt a big deal.
The ease of install and fitment is most important for me also

Re: Best headers for 428?

Mister....

What transmission are you planning on installing? I believe unless you are thinking of some Automatic, there really isn't any over the counter variety out there.

The transmission isnt such big deal because now i got the thoughest fit anyone can dream of!!
Its got a big PACT AOD in now and curent 2'' headers are a real pain in the as.

Re: Best headers for 428?

6114 or FPA will go in, tranny, engine, headers as a unit with either a Toploader, TKO-600, C-4 or C-6 behind an FE. You unbolt the idler arm for the steering so the tie rod will rest on the floor and it slides right in. Here are some pics with my TKO

The ONLY reason the itnake was off was because I had to return a bum set Crane alum roller rockers, and I didnt want the intake on during initial setup of the Ersons (and they hadnt arrived yet)

This technique works with a C-6 as well, it was 20 minutes from hook to setting on the mounts, including pictures, one guy, no help, never laid under the car
