1990 Supercat/coup

K, my buddy has a 1990 Merc Supercat with an automatic tranny. He just blew up the second transmission in under 3 years and I know he hardly pushes the car (I'd be waaayyyyy rougher with her). I don't know much about those cars or what transmissions they have but more importantly, what is a good susbstitute transmission to swap in that is fairly straight forward to install?

Cheers
Kevin

Re: 1990 Supercat/coup

Is he using used transmissions or rebuilt. If they are rebuilt,I'd find a better builder. When I had my AOD,I had it behind a strong running modified 5.0,and chirped the tires in the first three gears. The tranny took every bit of the beating.

It a Supercat so it has the 3.8 SC and it is an automatic. The first tranny was the original one and the second he got was used. I know he'd prefer a 5spd for it and I heard a rumor that the 5 spd they used is the same as the ones in the Mazda trucks???

Thanks for the help.

Cheers
