1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

hello all,

I am currently working alone on a project my dad and I began before he died. Unfortunately, he was the technical brains of the operation, and I am trying to complete it without him. So hopefully, that earns me some slack, in case this "problem" is a stupid oversight on my part.

The car was bought without an engine or transmission. It's original equipment was a 351 and FMX transmission (courtesy of Ford Research, who were very helpful). We bought a rebuilt 390 (unknown year) and C6 hoping it would be a relatively painless process.

He bought new FE frame mounts from Crites I believe. The motor mounts I know came from Advance Auto. I am at my wits end now about how these things are supposed to be configured. I have the frame mounts on the correct sides, as the holes are non-rectangular, and can only mount on one side, and in one direction. The motor mounts are not so simple. There appear to be four tapped holes in the block, near where the mount should attach.`I have the mounts attached currently with the two-hole flange up. Lastly, of the three possible holes in the frame mounts, I do not know which one is supposed to be used for the large stud on the motor mount.

If anyone is willing to take the time to take pictures of their 1969 390 frame and motor mount configuration, I would appreciate the gesture tremendously. A schematic from a ford manual (if it exists) would be excellent as well. In fact, any help whatsoever would be worth its weight in gold.

Thanks in advance, as I don't know how else to find the answers to these kinds of questions.

Thanks
Kurt

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

I think I may have a whole other problem.

Do FE blocks typically have three holes for mounts? Mine has four, which might mean it's a truck block. This would explain the inability to got the mounts configured in a way that works.

Any ideas anyone?

Are you certain you have an FE motor?

I'm not certain of anything. It was rebuilt 20+ years ago by someone else. I do know that the Hooker 6113 headers fit the heads...

I looked for the part number on the block but can't find it. Any idea where that thing hides?

At this point, given the headache, I'm considering buying an FE block and building a new engine. I could use the experience anyway.

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

take some pictures so we can see what your dealing with
and to help verify that it's a FE block ...

could also be that you have mounted left side on right side
or vice versa...

Early FE blocks have 2 mount holes, later ones have 4 (those 2 and 2 more).

Hooker 6113? That's a set for an FE GT head. SO it's an FE for sure.

But even a truck block will fit in a car, you just need to use the two correct holes.

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

where is the casting number for the block? I saw all kinds of stuff on it, but nothing that looked like a part number. I'll get a picture of that and the holes and my mounts tonight.

Thanks Guys

Kurt

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

FEs don't always have a casting # on them. First pic shows where it should be. But, ya also gotta know the date, as in second pic.

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

Here is some pics of the FE motor mounts on my 68 Fairlane, its the same for the 69.

The piece on the left is what goes on the engine (engine mount). The piece standing on end goes between the engine mount and the mount that is on the crossmember of the car. So all in all, there are 3 pieces for each side of the engine. Here is another pic of which bolt holes to use on the block

Hope this helps

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

Sorry it took so long. The car is not at my place and I have to go there on weekends to work (or take these pictures)

1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration-2011-04-03_12-50-16_149.jpg
These are the mounts. They are from Crites, by the looks of things. Specialty Auto Parts For Sale - Crites Performance Parts - critesperformanceparts.com (69 Torino)
They don't look like those shown by Fabri, but Crites is certain they are correct. I think these things might be the root of my problems. Either that or I have a screwed up mounting hole pattern on the block (see below)

This is the best image I can get of the block sitting in the car. I have the motor mount turned out of the way so you can see as much of the block as possible. It looks similar to yours Fabri, but I know mine has four holes per side.

Front view of block, showing '74 water pump. This engine was cobbed together on a shoestring budget about 20 years ago, I don't know if that water pump number gives anything away...

Close-up view of "352" cast into the front of the block, which I read was only done on FE's

So there are the pictures folks. Given that info, what do you think? I'm beginning to think I'm completely nuts.

The mounting of the motor in the car is what's giving me problems. Nothing is lining up. The headers mount to the heads just fine.

Re: 1969 Torino 390 frame/motor mount configuration

The red arrows show the holes where the upper part of the bracket should be bolted to the block. your mount looks like the kind that only uses two holes, which would probably be the front two. the blue arrows are for the other holes in the lower mount, one of which will probably make the upper mount line up much better. you might also need to find a different upper mound if it doesn't come out right.
