Front Tire width

I have a 69 Torino Fastback. I am working with a fabricator for a custom front end suspension. I have the tires and wheels I want to use just need help knowing how wide I can go with them before hitting fender on turns. I've read some general guidelines like .5" to .25" clearance between outside tire edge and inner fender. I do want to try to lower the front end as well. I need some help or suggestions on how much space I need to not rub on turns.

Re: Front Tire width

I have a 64 Galaxie 500XL that I put 18x8 w4.5 BP w 245/45/18 on the front. I also lowered the car three inches all around. I did have some rub issues on the inner frame rails. at full turn either direction I had about .125" of clearance from the top of the tire to the fender lip (too close for comfort). I would suggest that you lower your front end and get your suspension installed and then put the wheel that has the correct back space that your are planning on using. You can probably get a cheap pair of used tires similar to what you want to use. Mount them onto the car and take your measurements. From there you can use a tire calculator (free online) to determine the widest/tallest tire you can use. I ended up having to go to a 225/45/18 because of the rub issue but I am also running taller than stock wheel/tire combos. The back tires on my car are 20 x8 with 255/45/20. They fit great with plenty of room to spare in the wheel well. I could still go with a 20 x10 w 285/40/20 and fit them in the wheel well with out issue. Probably do that next summer. Best of luck and welcome to the forum!
