I recently installed an MSD 6A ignition box on my car. I've had my battery die on my twice so I replaced it with an Optima yellow top. I haven't driven my car since then.
But in the 6AL installation in the ARCHIVES, it shows the heavy red power wire going to the starter relay and the heavy black wire being grounded to a voltage regulater screw. But when I installed my 6A, the directions said to route each wire to the battery terminals. Which is correct? Does the box draw power from the battery even when the car is not running the way I have it installed? If I routed the wires the way they are routed in the tech article and not the way the inscructions said to, will it solve my battery issue?
did you route both of the red wires to the battery
if you did that is your problem, the heavy red goes to the battery + and the black to a good ground. The small red goes to a switched power(somewhere in the fuse panel works)
Are you running points , Duraspark or other type distibutor? small red goes to switched ignition (ususlly the original + side of coil to ignition switch, white is usually not used except in points and it goes to the - side of the coil
when you turn the ignition to ON there is wire from the ignition switch to the + side of the coil, that is also connected to the MSD and hence gives the box its power, thats all there is to it, the box will be on if the key is in the ON position and start positions only!
