Suspension Upgrades

I've got cash now, and I'm going to upgrade my suspension. My control arms, bushings and springs were replaced about 2 years ago (I got 620 lb springs), but I've been using the then Grand Auto $20 shocks in the front, and I have the stock leaf springs in the back with busted air shocks. No rear sway bar, front bar is stock, but I have replaced all of the bushings with poly.

I met a guy who makes custom adjustable sway-bars on Audi's and Beemers, and he's going to make mine, but I'd like some input on shocks and springs.

What kind of shocks should I get? I've heard good things about KYB, and also about Edelbrock IAS and Koni shocks. My car is lowered, and I have Z-rated low profile tires. I really want my car to handle as well as possible without converting to rack and pinion.

Also, where can I get some good high performance leaf springs for my Cougar?

'67 Cougar, 331, Eagle Crank, SIR Rods and Forged SRP Pistons, TFS Twisted Wedge Heads, Holly DP 750. 400 HP & 420 lb/ft

I ave a '67 Mustang with a 351-C and 5 speed. I used '70 big block mustang springs cut 1 coil up front. Have the '67 Shelby 1 1/8" front bar. In rear I used '70 Boss 302 springs with 1 full leaf added. '70 Boss 302 rear bar 5/8". Koni's all around. Poly bushings in rear springs, and both sway bars.
I use BFG 265-50-15 all around. The front upper control arms are lowered 1" like the early Shelbys. I think the car sits just right. I also have Maier Racing fender flairs to fit the big BFG's.

I too have done the whole front end rebuild with the PST suspension polygraphite bushings, and I put Edelbrock IAS shocks front and rear. There is a big difference right off the bat. The car is very smoothe on smoothe surfaces, but with these older cars you will always get bumpy rides when the roads aren't smoothe.

I put 620 lb springs in front as well, and the car handles well for a 65 stang. I too am thinking about not going with a rack & pinion conversion, but a big problem with the steering linkage is that on the turns, the geometry doesn't stay consistent and one tire will go in more than the other. I've heard flaming river makes a steering box that will help reduce the steering ratio which would help with the steering. I believe their website: would have some more info.

My brother uses Maier Racing upper control arms, race rear leaf springs(really nice elimnates spring wrap-up), 1 1/8" sway bar and Spax Shocks. The ride is firm (not harsh) and it handles like a slot car. I am actually going over to Maier racing this afternoon to get his rear springs and upper control arms for my '65 coupe. I noticed you are from the Bay Area, Maier Racing is in Hayward, he is a good guy to talk to about suspensions.
