Mechanical fuel pump VS. Electric fuel Pump

Will changing from the Holley 110 GPH mechanical fuel pump to the Holley blue 110 gph electric fuel pump make any horsepower difference on my 351w? Change my ET's?

please let me know thanks.

Yes there will be some horsepower available with the electric unit, with each unit rated the same,and unless you are a class racer that needs every bit of power available,the dependability and convience the mechanical unit offers,it would be the choice for me...Dave.

You'll go faster as you try to drive away from the noise that Holley Blue will make. There is a little HP to be made, but not much. It'm more convinence factors - you can shut off an electric pump. That lets you drain the carb for tuneups and for theft deterrent. You can also reroute your fuel line away from engine heat sources.

If you have a street car, and it doesn't make over 500hp, you don't NEED an electric pump.

Mechanical pumps are much more quiet and reliable (not to mention less expensive) than electric units. They are my overwhelming first choice for regularly street driven cars.

You're not going to gain any significant power by switching to an electric pump if the mechanical is doing it's job of keeping the bowls filled with fuel.

Only way to tell is an o2 reading on the dyno. Unless you running too lean the motor doesn't care which pump you use. Might be a very slight differenct due to fuel heat, but unless your John Force that wont matter. As far as hp used/wasted to turn the mechanical pump cam......I doubt it could be measured and repeated consistantly to even have an answer.

There's an additional concern too - the Holley Blue needs a pressure regulator, since it's output pressure is in the 14 psi area. The reg they supply is a total POS, by the way - It really needs a return-type regulator and a line back to the tank.

You may also wish to know that the quality control in the Blue pumps has slipped over the last few years - I currently have one back at Holley to find out why the pressure goes to 3 psi when the pump gets hot.

I run a Carter HV mechanical pump on my 331 and have yet to run it out of gas. As a matter of fact, I have to set the floats low or it will over feed the 750 HP carb. If your fuel flow gives up, you will definately feel it!! At the top of the gear the car will feel like someone is hitting the brakes.

I am running a Carter 110 pump as well.Works fine on the street and really has the capacity to feed 530 hp + at 6500 rpm.Only thing; if you dragrace the car with slicks the underpressure generated by the pump may not be enough on the starting line causing acute fuel delivery problem..that´s what happened to me.On the street it is totally ok.

Fuel pump problems usually show up in the top of the gear at the strip and not off the starting line. I would point my finger at the rear carb jets or fuel pickup getting uncovered before blaming the pump. JMO

i have a question. I am having built a 347 stoker, brodix heads, biggs carb ect.. will my stock 289 hi-pro fuel pump be ok for the stroker about 500hp? I know when i add the supercharger i will for sure need a good one.

I switched from a Holley Mechanical pump to an Edelbrock mechanical pump on my 429 . Neither of these mechanicals would feed the car properly. With any amount of heat , it would just quit. I then switched to a Carter Street electric. I have run it for three years and have never run out of gas , or had any problems with it. I wish I had switched sooner. The pump was cheaper than the mechanicals, though it does require extra wiring. It is also nice to start the car after it has sat for several months. I just turn the pump on for a few seconds and start the car. I love the electic on my car. I have the little mounting isolators and sound is minimal.

Bluestreek, I see your point. What I thought first was that the pump pickup was sucking air instead of fuel .I filled up the gas tank without any improvement.
The capacity and of the fuel system is adequate since the engine runs clean through the traps at 6500 rpm on 4th.
It is difficult to believe it could be the rear jets : I have wedged the carb to be parallel to the ground and the float level is correct, 60 ft times are only about 1.85 sec. What I´ve heard you´ll need jet extensions after 60 ft times are in the 1.6 sec range or better.
What I think it is: inertia wants to keep the fuel "at the starting line" and the underpressure generated by the mechanical pump is not good enough to overcome this sudden counterforce.

Sounds like you guys need jet extensions. Once you get to where the car will 60ft in the 1.7's, it's time to make that $17 investment for the extensions and notched float.

Holley part # 116-10 comes with both the extensions and notched float.
