Here's the Forward Clutches/Steels (they all look like that)
Here is the forward clutch, still pressure tested fine:
This is the junk in the pan
This is the where the reverse band sits:
The rest of the tranny looks fine, only about 1000 miles since I rebuilt it. I found that I had the vac. modulater valve in backwards, but would that lead to this? In the "end days" it felt like it was getting stuck in two gears between 2 and 3. Not sure why the high/rev band would be so trashed too?
Going to clean clean clean and put it back together again (new seals/clutches). Besides flushing everthing out, is there anything else I should look for? I don't think it ran very long with all the crap in there, the pump looks OK. Not sure what else to check. Sorry for the long post...
Thanks for any ideas.
And yea, next time it starts to slip I'll lay off the throttle
The clearance was right on when rebuilt, I agree that there must have been a pressure loss. Would the modulater valve in backwards let enough pressure go to do this? I did put it in the right way, but by then I think the damage was already done.
On a side note, any hope of flushing the convertor? Hate to have to buy another with so few miles.
FINALLY!! Someone who's had the EXACT same problem I had for one full season! The valve body is not sealing properly causing the low/reverse band to partially engage during normal forward gear operation. Causes a lot of heat buildup on the sprag input shell as seen in the pic where the band rides, and normally eats up the forward clutch as well. Mine was 2 separate problems with the valvebody...one was a leaky gasket and the other was a sticking valve, both contributing to low pressure and engaging too many things at once.
make sure and flush those cooler lines also, try to set the end play at about .008-.010 max the less the front drum moves the less it wobbles, if it moves to far the oil ring next to the pump on the delivery sleeve jumps out, the long thin neck on the mod valve would let line pressure go rite back into the pan those are some pretty good sized holes, big pressure loss, this thing probably started failing rite away
