Keith Black 347 Stroker Pistons

Keith Black 347 hyper pistons #246 and #366 don't use an oil ring spacer but only a locating pin to keep the bottom oil ring rail from rotating. Most forged pistons with a short compression height use a spacer to help support the oil rings. Has anybody using the KB246 or KB366 had any problems relating to the oil rings lack of a spacer?

I thought they have a 3/16 groove that 2 oil rings and the oil ring spacer/separator goes in. Are you saying they have 2 individual oil lands? For oil rings to work right they would have to have something to hold them apart from each other and a space for the oil to go. Were did you get your info from? Do you have a pic?

There is nothing wrong with using a pressed in pin to locate any ring and keep it from turning, all 2 strokes use those.

I tried to get on KBs site to see if the 246 number was what I got in my kit. It sounds familiar. My 347 runs good. The only thing I have noticed is a little "huffing" of oil coming from the valve cover breather. Although I don't drive it everyday, I have not noticed a loss of oil and haven't had any problems (knock on wood).

63SC: Thanks for the real word info. I think you have #246 pistons.
Fogged408: The pistons have one oil ring groove with a roll pin locater that keeps the bottom ring rail and the expander from rotating.Since the wrist pin intersects the oil ring land the bottom rail must span about a 3/4 inch gap and the pin keeps the rail from rotating into the span.It just seems like the rail would flutter due to lack of support across the wrist pin hole.KB forged 347 pistons use a spacer to support the oil ring but the hypers don't.I was just wondering if anybody had problems with the setup.

The 347 pistons number 366-030 i have are supported by the oil ring spacer and a gapless second ring.

Both the 246 and 366 come with oil ring support spacers.

Re: Keith Black 347 Stroker Pistons

The pins don't extend out far enough to interfere with the oil ring spacer. Back when I was a kid we used to have one-piece oil rings. They were a solid ring with a grooved center and holes drilled or slots cut through the groove to allow the oil control. I wonder if that is what they are using here?

I haven't used the pistons in question - so take it for what it is worth.

This thread was started 7 years ago.
I remember when KB did have a pin in the oil groove and you had to grind the oil rail to fit around it.
But they dropped that some time ago. At least I have not seen a new piston with it lately.
