Sequential Tail Lights

Electrical is Technical... isn't it?

I would like to get a kit to make my 3 tail lights blink sequentially:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...962667885&rd=1

Or the chase is even better: (check out the video in this one)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...963859564&rd=1

But $65? or $120??

Anybody know how I can make this myself or have the plans?

Thanks for the help!

I have '68 Shelby lights on mine. I have built my own sequencer in the past using SCRs. For the time and money spent the last time, I went to
www.webelectricproducts.com
Good price and you can choose if you want the brake lights to sequence or not (like the original).

I modified the ones in my 67 Cougar, at the track at night all of my tail lights sequence from inside out at the same time. Looks cool but it will probably come to an end if the track actually starts going by the NHRA rules, no flashing or blinking lights allowed.

No blinking what? Take a look at the lights they typically put on the Jr. Dragsters. They blink and sequence all the time.

Sequential Tail Lights

I added the sequential kit for the taillights on my 68 mustang and they worked great as blinkers. However when I activated the hazard switch, I got no sequential action. I replaced the hazard relay with a sequential relay and got both sides to blink sequentially at the same time. THEN, I bought a sequential hood turn signal kit, installed it and everything worked and looked great for one night. All the lights were blinking in sequence with the hazard switch activated. The next day, I activated the hazard switch and got nothing from any lights. I turn the key on and the blinkers all work and If I barely push the hazard switch and hold it, all the lights blink sequentially. I have checked all fuses and connections. Cant find anything wrong. I'm thinking maybe the hazard switch went bad. If thats the case then I will have to replace the entire turn signal assembly as the hazard switch is integrated with the turn signal assembly. Anyone else ever have this problem or have any other ideas as to what I can do? And does anyone know where I can find a turn signal assembly besides a salvage yard?

Well, after about an hour and a half of trial and error, head scratchin and a little cussin, I found the culprit. I was running out of ideas, so out of vengeance, I stabbed the main fuse box, where the 20 amp Buss fuse for the hazard lights is located, with my test light. And lo and behold lights started flashing. I pulled the fuse out, examined it and could see nothing wrong. I changed it anyway, put everything back together and all is working well. Looks like a Christmas tree. Wish I had more space on my website to show a movie of the lights, but I only have space for a few still pics. Mines the 68.

Cool. Sounds like it might look like Kit - or a Cylon warrior. Sequential taillights at the strip would be a nice touch.

Chris

There must be a waiver for the Jr's. This is a quote from the rules...

8.4 TAIL LIGHTS

Must have one functional tail light for night operations. Flashing, blinking or strobe lights prohibited. See General Regulations 8.6.

Interesting - the IHRA book only mentions a tail light is required, and I had to dig to find that. I can't find anything about lights at all in the General Regs. Weird.

All I could find was on a website for an IHRA track that states

Taillights:

All vehicles and Bikes must be equipped with a working taillight. All taillights must be turned on whenever track lighting is activated, and be visible from the tower. All tail lights must display a solid red beam.

This may be above and beyond what IHRA requires though.

I made my sequential set up 0n my 68 from a schematic on www.gofastforless.com
All of the parts were sourced from Radio Shack and the cost was less than $30.00

Uploaded a short video of my sequentials (hood and tail lights) to my website. Also threw in a peek at the lights being installed under the hood (work in progress). It's a 9 meg file so if your on dial up you might want to go catch a movie or something while you wait for the download.

Scroll all the way to the bottom and click where it says:

If it doesn't play let me know. Everything looks like it is working on my end.

Made some changes to my website. To see the hood and tail light sequentials, go to:

http://www.cornerlotclassics.com

Click on the 1968 mustang link on the left and scroll down and click on video. I sized it down from 9 megs to 1.6 megs. Should load a lot faster. Must have realplayer installed.
