In my opion Mobile 1 is not what it used to be. If you want a synthetic, try Shell Rotella (blue bottle) sold at Wally Mart. About $12-$13 per Gallon or 5 quarts can't remember. Out performs Mobile 1 compares close to Amsoil synthetic. Not good for air cooled engines or roller bearings, too slippery and does not allow the bearings to roll.
Mobil 1 is the oil that finally eliminated the bearing troubles I was having with my 428. With any other oil at the end of the season the bearings would be junk, my engine builder told me to go with Mobil. I have run rod bearings for 2 seasons now and they still looked great.
I use it in both race cars. Only complaint I have is that the Mobil 1 seems to milk quicker than the crude did in the alky motor. Other than that, I like it. Holds pressure whether it's 40 degrees or 240, where the old 10w30 Valvoline would drop about 15 psi when it got up to temp.
How often do you need to change synthetic? Yeah it has better lubrication properties, but if it is doing its job, it will be collecting engine contaminants. For a basic cruiser, with hardly any miles per year, I wonder if synthetic, changed out a couple times a year (or more often?) is not worth the extra cost.
What about you racers? How often do you change your oil?
Average person changes oil 4 times a year (every 3 months).
5 qts oil: $6
1 filter: $3
Total: $9 x 4 = $36 annually
1 filter: $3
Total: $25 x 4 = $100 annual
So running the cheap stuff saved you 65 bucks in a whole year... if you REALLY need that extra 65 bucks a year, why not just drink one less can of soda every day, or a couple less beers a week, or one less stop at McDonald's ever month, and let both yourself and your engine be much healthier
