406 FE into a 1955 Ford Sedan

A friend has a 406 tripower motor with a toploader he would like to swap into his 55 Ford sedan. Anyone here ever do this swap? How difficult is it? What parts are needed?

General rule of thumb...If it came with a "Y"-block, an FE is easily a direct swap, both have front sump oil pans. Biggest issue will be cooling, transmissions, rear end and headers. The modern 9 in. didn't come out until '57, so the factory rear may not last. Headers, as mention are available. Cooling is not that big an issue today, there are many shops that have, can recore your old or can make a modern aluminum replacement.

This engine swap is not breaking new ground, it's a fairly popular swap going back to the late '50's. The top loader makes it easier.

Both FE and Cadillac engines were very popular swaps back in the day.

Use the Y-Block V8 mounts and it's a drop in. The rear tranny mount typically has to be moved, but that's not a big deal. With the 3X2's, the air cleaner is tight at the firewall and requres modification either to the firewall or the air cleaner. Exhaust use to be a challenge but there are headers available now for that swap.

Big Motors are Fast but low 9.60\'s @ 135+ mph with a \"Y\" is just plain fun.

Ford Power Train (FPA) is a good place to start for a header search for this particular swap.

Here's a link to get you started.
