How much power would it make?

I have a friend with an 81 mustang lx coupe, and hes droping in an 8.8 rear, c6 trans, and a 460. The 460 will have stock ported heads, with CJ valves, 11:1 compression, a solid flat tappet cam, with .580 lift, and about 240* duration @.050. He will also be running a torker intake with an 850 holley. The car will have 2 inch headers, and a stock dual exhaust to keep things stealthy. Hes doing this setup because, he doesnt have to spend a dime at all. The 81 is reayd for a big block, and he has every part for the motor and car because of a deal gone sour about 10 years ago. He ended up with all these parts. So, I say that car with 4:10's and a 28x10 slick will go bottem 12's if not high 11's all day long. He says not as fast. What do you guys think. The car weighs 2900 lbs, with the motor in it. He figures it at about 400 at the flywheel. I say closer to 500.

The intake is going to hold you back big time. I'd bet somewhere in the 400 range with it on there.

You're going in opposite directions, the torker is for bottom end and your heads are for the top.

If you can hook up all that torque it should be fun at the strip, with slicks.

I have an old magazine buildup using similar parts and it ended up over 500hp after some tuning.

Re: How much power would it make?

My old 351 Cleveland had 378 hp at the flywheel and it ran a best of 11.91in the same body . With 500 hp it should be onto the 10 second range if set up right .

Re: How much power would it make?

The cam seems light on duaration. The larger the cubes the larger the cam can or should be. 240 is minimum . A larger cam in bigger bore will act like a mild cam in small bore. also the lobe seperation needs to be around 105-107. If you were mesauring the duratiion at.050 then it's good. Also the carb will not give 500 hp. There are allot of things that cause good HP but I can't see 500 in this combo. Take a look at ERngine Masters back issues or some of the Ford big block books from the book store or at the Ford performance parts suppliers to dial in the build. Your off to a great start and there are some great improvements for 460 CID projects. Cheers Paul

The longblock, properly outfitted and in good tune, has the potential to generate 500+ hp. Due to the carburetor, intake, and exhaust system as described, the engine will likely make substantially less...but it's hard to say exactly how much because of the vague combo info given.

Re: How much power would it make?

What if it had a Victor intake with an 850 speed Demon on it? And I have a 3.5 inch exhaust that he may buy off me. What would it make with those parts?

Re: How much power would it make?

I'm not a fan of Demon carbs but more importantly the engine needs more air to breathe; that's the issue.

A Victor 460 (4150 pad) with a Victor portmatch on the cylinder head intake ports (and not the intake runners) combined with a Holley 950 HP will put you in the high 400's.

A Victor 460 (4500 pad) with a Victor portmatch on the cylinder head intake ports (and not the intake runners) combined with a Holley 1050 Dominator will put you over 500.
