how do I get headers installed.

I need some basic order of operations for installing headers on a 68 mustang. I am putting a 351 in with the headman conversion headers. The engine and tranny are out of the car but bolted together and ready to go in. Is it possible to put the headers on the engine prior to installation?

No, not with shock towers.

Best way is to lay the headers into position in the engine bay... then slowly lower the motor in place... once the motor is almost in place... bolt up the headers and drop the motor into the mounts.

Re: how do I get headers installed.

on my maverick i put the motor into the engine bay but left it hanging a few inches above the mounts and then layed the headers on their side under the car and then turned them upwerd into the engine bay. i had to get the car up off the ground a little though

Re: how do I get headers installed.

On my '68 Falcon with 351W I have to put the engine in, loosely install the passenger side header, coming up from the underside. Next I install the trans, then I can tighten the passenger side header and then install the drivers side header, also from underneath. This is with Hooker Super Comps.

Any deviation from this process, on my car, and the next piece won't fit.

Yours will 'tell' you how it wants to be assembled, too.

Re: how do I get headers installed.

Unless a header is 2 piece, I always put them in bolted to the motor, even on an FE AND even with the tranny bolted on

I unbolt the idler arm and let the steering drop (without a tranny probably not required) jack the back of the car up, and slide it right in

The whole series below was one guy (me), 20 minutes not counting pics, and I never even laid under the car except to jack the tranny up to put the crossmember in

FYI, the intake is only off because I was waiting for Rocker arms and wanted to trial fit everything before bolting the intake up

Re: how do I get headers installed.

As you can tell from the responses you're getting, installing headers really varies depending on the style of headers and chassis.

I have a '67 Mustang with a 351w with 1 3/4 Hooker Super Comp long tube headers. I just had my headers coated and this is how I do it (with engine in car). Jack up the front of the car with jack stands under forward part of subframe, turn the steering wheel to either left or right so the pitman arm / idler arm / center link are positioned to give the most clearance. Slide the headers in from underneath the car. Go topside and install the gasket and bolts. Note that my Super Comps have one tube that slips into the collector on each side to help facilitate installation. Also, I don't have power steering.

Re: how do I get headers installed.

these are great tips keep them coming. I have a day or two until my new rag joint shows up. I knew I wanted to get that out of the way first.

Greg, I'm right there with you on the Hooker Super Comps in a '67 Mustang! I also find that some beer, a hammer, and a little cursing helps quite a bit as well!

My427stang, I don't think I've ever seen anyone install the engine with the headers bolted on before... that's pretty cool! Very cool car also by the way!

Re: how do I get headers installed.

great news! Thanks for all of the ideas. I decided to go with jacking up the rear end and installing with the headers on. I did not even remove the center link. Manual steering, that helped. It worked great. Only one hickup I put the motor mount brackets on the wrong sides. Dumb. It is a bitch to get the mounts installed on backward brackets. Install went so smooth up to this point I never got under the car to notice I was coming up short. It was easily fixed.

Re: how do I get headers installed.

Glad it worked out!

Certainly the easiest way in my book

If you are installing a Fe motor this is the ONLY way. I honestly didn't believe it would work that easily but I did it both tcp motor mounts as well. Slide it in. It works. I wasn't quite as fast though but inside if 2 hours start to finish. Including jacking the car, lining motor mounts and adjusting motor alignment (adjustable mounts) and picking up tools. Just remember to turn the wheel to move pitman arm out of the way. I have never installed any motor/trans like this. Even small block/c4 packages. I was talking to an old line mechanic who has never even done it this way but it works and he saw it and couldn't believe it.
