motor decision for truck build

I'm toying with the idea of building an engine for my 69 F100 street truck. It has mild 5.0 now and it's great. But more power would be welcome and my local machine shop has a a 347 stroker w/ forged internals that i can get for a good price. I thought i might add nitrous for some improved performance the few times of year it would see at the strip. But as i ponder it more, and consider that the truck weighs about 5k lbs, i fear i might regret that motor size (enough torque?). And after dropping that kind of coin i don't want any regrets. I'm not expecting a 10 second 1/4. I do drive the truck about 5 miles to work almost daily in the warm months and i want it to be streetable. But like everyone else, i want the best of all worlds. Your thoughts please?

I think a 347 would be a real good choice for ya. What gearing do you have in the pickup now??

347 Stroker, 10.6:1, Vic Jr, World Jr. heads (2.02/1.60 valves), Custom 780cfm ProSystems 4150 Double Pumper, XE284H cam, MSD E-Curve, 4.30 gears/31 Spline axles, Tremec TKO 5 Speed w/.83 5th gear ratio.

A 347 will be nice compared to your warmed up 302. I think if you can get a good deal on it go for it

A 347 would be a nice improvment for sure over a 302 but with the wieght of a truck I would want a bigger torquier engine...A 351 based stroker or a big block would be my choices to get all that mass moving and then you can forget about the nitrous...

HI
I think you'd be more happy with a BB 460.
I'm running a 460 in my 4500lb 4 door internation pick up.(in signiture)
RPM intake
750 edelbrock
Home ported D3 head
Launita cam .516 in .543 ex lift.
flat top .30 over pistons
ballanced bottom end
hooker header 1.7/5 long tube
MSD box running a Dura spark.
and a C6 with a shift kit.
3.50 detroit true track.
Now I have not had the carb calabrated (it came off a 350) or the dizzy recurved. I leave the line only loading it to 1,000 rpms (first times out) and it pushes my truck to a 14.5 et in the 1/4 @ 93 MPH. I figgure thats not bad for my lead sled.
It sure suprises people when I gas it at a stop light or the track and that sucker is just gone.
THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT......
good luck in what ever you chose but I'd lean towards a 460...

Didn't you just raise this question a few weeks back? What did you finally decide on?

"Tell it like it is or don't tell it at all" 1964 Falcon 2dr HT, 347V8 4V, dual exhaust, 5sp, pwr assist R&P steering, AM radio, heater with defrost and 2sp fan, electric windshield wipers, cigar lighter, dlx light group, bucket seats, console and full carpet.

Well sort of...In my case I have a 1996 pickup with a 5.0 that must remain emmisions legal and try to get the best mileage possible so the question was how much would a stock type 347 improve pulling power over the 5.0...It seems the general opinion was that it would be a worth while modification......If I was not handicapped with keeping it emissions legal and it being a daily driver it would have a 460 no question about it...I have swapped a gutless 1982 302 for a 1969 429 thunder jet and the results were fantastic...Much more power and even increased mileage!
