Ford cams are ground with "dual taper" on the lobes. This means half the lobes are pushing the cam forward and half are pushing it backwards to "neutralize" thrust load because it has a thrust plate unlike older GM V8s. Yes the same lobe taper that keeps lifters turning. ( unless it's a roller cam which have no lobe taper at all). A dial indicator as previously mentioned is the best way to measure end play. .005-.010 is considered acceptable.
