302 question from a newbie.

Hello all, I just joined the forum this week. I've got a 69 F-100 with a 71 302/C4 combo. The in dash gauge shows the oil pressure at the bottom of the white bar on the gauge face. It's burning/using a quart every couple hundred miles, and has started a slight knocking also. I've found the reman engines on ebay and this led to the question. Roller HO vs. late 80's early 90's truck motor, is the difference in power going to be worth making the changes, harmonic balancer, pullies, flex plate, etc. I was looking at the late 80's motors to get away from the rail rockers. My current engine is way down on power and I would guess a fresh 302 of any sort would be a big improvment. The truck is not a daily driver, no heavy hauling, just crusin' to town or church. The C4 has been rebuilt and set up to shift nice and firm, the old engine has a 600 Edelbrock, alu. intake, BBK shorties, and a Dura spark so I would like to use all these item also if possible. Sorry about the length of this post and any input would be great and thanks in advance............ Rick

Re: 302 question from a newbie.

Welcome. Not worth the effort. HO and truck engines of the same years used the same heads. Bigger difference is the intake and cam - and you have half of that covered already. Swap your parts and a mild performance cam into a truck engine and you're about there, or maybe a bit better, without the front-dress hassle.

I'd stay away from a reman from ebay... Someone may be able to suggest a place near by if you give your location .. Good Luck and Welcome to FM !

Take Care

Re: 302 question from a newbie.

Thanks Earl, I wondered about the ebay suppliers. Engines Direct was the store that gave the most info, as in boring up to 30 over but no more and a 3 year 100k. mi. warranty. There are a couple of local shop here in New Bern NC (coastal). They offer 90 day warranties and the prices are about the same as ebay. But if I have a problem, he's 10 minutes away, not across the country. I have a spare block to use also. Hey thanks again Earl, can we shift gears, anyone have any good/bad dealings with any of the mass produced reman engines...........Rick
