Trans mount needed without studs - need tapped holes - Fairlane Toploader

Can anyone direct me to a trans mount similar to a GM style? What I’d like is mount that will bolt to the tail housing of a Toploader but instead of two studs from the mount going through the cross member it would have tapped holes so you can use bolts. Every time I want to drop the trans I have to drop the exhaust to get the cross member out and it’s a pain. I had been told to use a GM mount from the 60’s to 80’s but it’s too short. The distance between the holes in the tail housing are further apart than the total length of the GM mount so that won’t work. I’m sure something has to be out there that will work. I did hear a T5 mount will work but I don’t want to keep buying mounts on someone’s opinion. I’m looking for someone who has something like this in use.

Thanks,

I would just cut off the studs, drill holes and weld nuts to the top of the mount.

bmcd66250,
Here is a crappy cell phone pic. The stock type mount is on the left. If you cut the studs you really can't do anything if you drill it out. You'll be in a blind spot and the molded rubber won't allow you to weld a nut anyway. In front of the tail housing is the GM mount. The design is what I'm after but it's too small.

I see you are in York? I live in Denver (Lancaster County). I lived in York in the 70's and graduated from school at York
High in '78. What part of York are you from?

Thanks,

I see. Suppose you split (saw) the GM mount in half to spread it and make it wider?

I lived in the city, graduated from Vo-Tech in '72. Now I live NW of the city near Dover. I often go to Denver to jump on the Turnpike when I head to Philly and Jersey.

Thanks!

So, were you a "loop" cruiser in the 70's? I use to live on North Penn St. Back then near Stambaughs who had a Custom Van shop on the corner of Rosevelt & Philadelphia.

If the picture is what it looks like to me then why not just make and adapter plate for the GM mount. It looks like it is a little shorter than the stock mount if so just cut a piece of flat steel to make up the difference and then drill holes in it for the toploader tail shaft. Then drill and tap a couple of holes to match the GM mount you could bolt the mount to the adapter and grind off any of the bolt threads that stick up through. Then the only thing you would need to do is redrill your crossmember for the GM bolt pattern.
Another option would be to build what you want from scratch as a solid mount, this would only be a good idea if you are using motor plate though.

Good Luck

That is an idea as I need to build up 3/8" to get the same height as the factory Ford mount. Maybe just weld a 3/8" thick bar to the GM mount and drill two thru holes.

Thanks,

Yeah, I go to the Muscle Car Madness. I've only ever had the car to a track twice. At the time it had a 347 w/ a 125 shot of nitrous. Could never get any traction, car wasn't really set up for drag racing. A couple rods came out through the oil pan so I sold the nitrous set up and AFR heads, put together a basic 5.0 and just cruise around now.

The Maverick looks good, I see the scoop is different. I like the chrome bumper years of Mavericks.

So did you graduate from York High and if so, was it '72? You may know a good friend of mine named Terry Duncan. He hung around our neighborhood back then but never knew him while I lived there. He was dating a neighborhood girl named Judy Kovalack (spelling?) He had a '74 Trans Am.

The "Circuit" was a good time back then. I had bought a new '82 Mustang GT in 1982 and was cruising the circuit in that until Mayor Marshall put the kabosh to that....forever!

Do you go to Fords at Carlisle? If so i'll have to catch up with you and check out the old Maverick

I graduated in 72 from Vo-Tech. The names of Terry and Judy sound familiar but I can't picture them (it's getting tough :)). I'm always at Fords at Carlisle, with the Mavericks.
