Factory 289 timing vs aftermarket upgrades

Since this 289 of mine has been re done way too many times. The final result is great. Fantastic rebuild with the rigt upgrades. Now when the car was done stock it ran about 6-10 * btdc. And if you tried to advance it too much it would buck. Withe the new combo and ignition upgrades it can be set at 16* and above. Actually found it ran at 20 * by mistake. MSD said in the brochure to advance it until it loads up the starter. Seems I can get my timing over that before it will load up the starter. Wonder if the base timing is set too high. Is this unusual and I understand I must be cautious or blow a piston . Or More . Should one set the timing based on starter load . I would think doing a little calculations would be the way .

That's how I give the motor the initial ignition timing it wants. At operating temperature advance the timing in 2* increments, shut down and allow to heat soak for a minute, restart. Do this until the starter drags or it spits back through the carb. Back off 2* from that point. The only time that didn't work for me is with a cam with 300* advertised duration. Be sure to adjust total advance so that it's not excessive.

That's pretty much what I do with a street motor.....

Again..keep in mind the total advance

I had my timing light on today and with the rpm up around 2200 I put the light on and it read up past 38 btdc. Not sure how far over but didn't have timing tape. Backed the timing down from 16 * to 12* and found the total at about 38 btdc. So I think I may have to change the bushing on my MSD READY TO RUN to get more in on my initial. What do smal blocks like to have for total timing all in and is 2200 enough rpm to get total advance.

Greg, I'm running 16 initial with 20 mechanical and it seems to be a great setup. All in by around 2200 as you said.

Thanks Matt. Turned my timing back to about 12 degrees with this MSD ready to run and found that it sure woke the camshaft sound up. Geeeeez sounds Great. May have lost a bit of performance. I think the MSD is set at 21 degrees mechanical. Not sure how much vacuum it pulls. I guess from what I have read is that you can mark your harmonic balancer at 36 and then take the car up to 2500. Check the timing light and set the total timing like that . Lock the distributor down and that should be in the ball park......Does that sound right ?
