351W head confusion help!

I have recently acquired a 1969 windsor ( figured out from block castings ) It is a 2 barrel motor. Here is the tricky part, it is complete and I am wanting to throw it in a 66 fairlane to see if its any good.

While in doing that, I have no idea what heads are on this car. Under the valve covers, beneath the rockers these numbers are cast 3c23 on one head and 3c27 on the other.

Any idea what these are? Countless google searches will not give any information.

Thanks in advance and sorry for being a noob

You found the date codes which will not ID the head. The ID casting # is located under the port that comes from the intake so you can't readily see it without removing the intake manifold.

Here are a couple of websites that might help narrow it down some:

The following one shows some samples of the casting stuff that can be found under the heads intake port of the head (I am not implying that yours are the heads being illustrated):

Re: 351W head confusion help!

Either 72 or 73 was the last year of the original 351W heads with ports and valves that the GT40 heads were designed from. There were some marine 302s and 351W that kept the original style 351W valve and port sizes.

If that was a date code the "C" would be for 1960's, wouldn't it? I thought 1970's would be a "D" code. You would hope the C9 heads on a C9 block.

no, the letter in a casting date is the month so it can be confusing.

The date codes you found give you the year, month and date the heads were cast but doesn't tell you which decade(1973,1983 etc)..If the heads are installed on the engine you can't see the casting #s that Dennis is talking about but there are other ways to identify the heads since they changed other features over the years...If the heads have rail rockers and the big spark plugs requiring a 13/16ths socket they are 1973s..If they have pedestal mounted rockers and smaller plugs using a 5/8ths socket they are likely 83s but 93s would be similar.

The way to tell if a 351 Windsor has the early heads on it from the out side is if it has an extra bolt in each end of the intake manifold! All 351 engines from 1969 to 1974 had a L shaped water port and a extra bolt at the front and back that a late 351 or a 302 don't have! If you count the bolts the early Windsor has 8 bolts on each side the late Windsor only had 6 the same as the 302!

This would only work if the engine still has the original intake manifold as well..The bolt holes would be covered up with an aftermarket or later model year intake.
