Replace the bearings by the application and measured crank journal diameter for proper clearances. Much simpler and far more accurate. Less desirable Option #2: If the bearings are being replaced on an installed crankshaft (driveway work), measure the combined bearing shell thicknesses, and compare to another known set. This is not a good option to set proper clearances with worn parts; but won't be any worse than it was, assuming the old ones were reasonably correct and the crank is not heavily worn.
