what the hell is this shaft for in my 64 c4?

i just picked up a rebuilt/used unit from a guy for my 67 project. Now, I am by no means a tranny guy.....
So i pulled off the original torque converter and i was expecting to simply see a 24 spline shaft. well, it was there all right but in the center of that shaft was yet another shaft. So i fiddled with it and was expecting it to lock in somehow but this extra mystery shaft just hangs out as if it is connected to nothing.

So is this normal? what the hell is the purpose of this thing AND should it somehow be engaged or no?

THANKS!

ok, i did some research. it seems that the little shaft in the center is the 24 spline input shaft while the larger outer shaft is the pump. is this right? still whats the deal with this 24 spline shaft? you can just take it out and whack someone in the head and then throw it back in the slot and your good to go? I dunno, it seems like it should engauge. also, i tried to turn the larger (pump?) shaft by hand and it wont move. is this normal? please help me sleep better tonight

The small one is the input shaft and is splined into the forward clutch drum.
The larger one is the stator support.
You will not be able to turn the large one.
The pump is driven by the end of the convertor that has 2 flats.

OK. so then is all this normal? you can just easily pull the input shAFT out and when you put it back in in doesnt have to engauge anything?
at least Im glad that not being able to spin the large one=normal.

any more info would be appreciated

The shaft engages in the splines of the forward clutch drum.
It should be a bit stiff to turn but doable.

GOT IT! thanks. I had to put a little more muscle to pop it in and then it did. I was too soft before. yes, it turns stiffly by hand.
